Scott in Bellingham
I am in the process of designing a EA82 with added transfercase for lower gears, the question comes up which tire and size should I run? at first I thought 31 or 32 maybe the Super Swamper TSL 32 / 9.5 x 15 , what are you guys running on your transfercase rigs? I have heard the rear stubs out of the diff like to break , what else is a week link?
ezapar
Ken runs 31 inch swampers. Scott is running 33 inch swampers. Mudrat ran 32 inch mudders. LumpyCam ran 30s and 31s. The bigger you get the skinnier your axles begin to look. With the exception of Ken, he has a solid rear.
Adam N.D.J.
I'm running 30's on mine. Haven't had a problem with stub shafts, have yet to actually break one. Axles on the other hand, if I burp the throttle just a little too much, BOOM!
subaruloverbrad
i ran 32x11.50x15 swampers on my 2 that i built, one with datsun t-case one with samuri case, samy case made world of difference

subarubrat
33x16s Iin my experience, running a Tcase or not, 30s are a great comprimise. With 30x12s the brake system is still capable, axle loading is allot less than with just 3 inches larger, and the tranny is allot happier. If you want to go bigger you have to WANT to go bigger and be prepared to deal with the increased maintenance that comes along with it. Another thing you need to be prepared for is the change in handeling. At 30x12 the truck handled like a legacy GT with the coil overs and adjustable shocks I have. With the 33x16s the handeling is much more truck like and you have to drive it like a little truck with big tires. The weight difference between the two sizes is considerable. On the plus side, I get unreal floatation in snow, sand and even sticky mud, my brakes are upgraded so stops are crazy fast, and it looks absolutly fantastic. I was out in our 5 inches of snow the other day and I couldn't even break traction and get it to slide when I tried unless I got on the gas and spun the tires first. Casualties: 2 trannys (1 rev, 1 2nd), two cups split open. No stubs believe it or not. My angles are signifigantly increased with a 2 inch suspension raise. At max downward travel the cups are at their limit. One cup I broke on hard pavement and one off road when the wheel dropped to negative travel and then contacted ground, I think going from lock to load caused that. Turbone
30x11.50 on 15" Chevy wheels. Man these suckers are wide, almost got me a ticket cause of them(among other items). No breakage yet, havent had a chance to get wild with it.

I really like your Hatch, looked at it many times is that a 8" lift?
Turbone
Yes, 8in lift. I think I would prefer skinnier tires, altho these ride nice. I worry some about damaging the sidewalls on roots/rocks, they cost to much to replace. I need more time off-road with it to make a discision yet. Adam N.D.J.
which axle usually breaks? and what kind of increased angle over stock are you running front and rear Ive run the stock Brat rears, modified (welded steel bands around cups) stocks. EA82 modifieds. I just don't have good luck with Soob axles, I've got a whole box of cups that look like Elmers gun after he fired it with Bug's finger in the end of the barrel. The travel and angles are all right around the same as stock, may be over a little on the travel by an inch or so.
mudrat79
The BEAST is currently runing 33x12.5x15 Swamper TSL bias ply rubber.... I can light the rear up on pavement in 2WD...No axles blown yet.... I don't drive it on the street much yet, cause One of the fronts is out of balance, and at 40 mph it gets one hell of a shake going.... My next Monster When I get to it will be Solid axle in the rear Like I did For Ken's Brat..... Won't say what Age it will be though... WoodsWagon
I'm running 30X9.5's on mine on a mixed set of chevy 15" rims. Without transfer case, 4" lift. Without the low range tranny, they were too big for offroading. The momentum I had to keep up was detrimental to the structure of the car. With the low rang3e, their perfect. With a transfercase, I'd say they would be on the small size. Of course, clearance is often an issue, and i had to go wild with a slege to fit them, and they still rub. Rooinater
31x10.5 bfg mud terrains. i was running 31x10.5 kumho mud terrains. over all they've been perfect. i'm still working out some weak links in the system. i've snapped a rear axle right behind the joint. and broke the rear welds once, i snapped the lsd stub. granted most of those breaks were cause of heavy throttle, large arizona rocks and a few other combos. i was very used to the heavy foot subaru wheeling and was adapting to the crawling my subaru was now able to do. i'll probably be doing a solid axle swap with a coil or 1/4 elliptic rear suspension if i keep her. the rear end i'll be looking at is 4.11 toyota axle with an aussie locker. but time is needed for that. i have a few of the axle housings and parts laying in the backyard, just need another third member... 31's have worked really well with an 8" lift. i also suggest to beef the front control arms up. i bought a set from mudrat. they are extreme beef. i had a lot of problems trying to keep them off the big rocks in arizona. and trust me they bend like butter if they bump a rock waterfall or a large rock in the trail. hopefully she'll be back together and ready to do some crawling again next winter. that way i can post up some pics on the terminater trails in pheonix.
