95 super subbie
i got this 91 loyale wagon auto for 50$ and only thing its good for is to demo it you cant have four drive so if i discoonect the rear drive shaft and take the rear out will it still move? do i have to leave it in front wheel drive or will it still go in four whell drive with the stuff taken out ? All_talk
The automatic trans uses a clutch pack to transfer power to the rear (not a center diff), and will work fine without the rear drive. If its a 4EAT (did those even come in the Loyals ?) the TCU may throw a code. The 4WD switch just opens a soleinod that applies Vacuum to the 4WD servo (diaphragm) to apply pressure to the rear transfer clutch... just leave it in 2WD. hooziewhatsit
it's normally 2WD, and only goes to 4wd if you put it there. That said, if the rules require removing the driveline to ensure that you don't use 4WD, I would recommend taking out one or both rear axles instead. If you take out the driveline, you'll leak ATF, and the driveline needs the rear diff in place to hold it in place.
NoahDL88
The rear driveshaft should be 2 piece. if it is, you can pull the center section of the drive shaft, behind the carrier bearing and in front of the rear diff, there will be a total of 8, 12mm bolts. be careful not to strip them, as after 14 years, it will happen easily. it should be clear very quickly if this is done right, if you see splines the wrong end was pulled. stephenw22
It's a 2-piece driveshaft, so you can take out just the back half of the driveshaft (the section with a u-joint at either end). Leave the front section in place, so the transmission fluid doesn't leak out. I had this done to my '85 wagon for about 2 years, after the rear axles went bad, and I couldn't find any replacement axles. Like it was said before, the subaru is normally a front-wheel drive vehicle. Pressing the 4wd button locks the rear wheels in. Not having the driveshaft in will make it front-only. NorthWet
... If its a 4EAT (did those even come in the Loyals ?)... The Turbo Loyales came with the 4EAT. 1990, maybe 1991 for Turbo Loyales? I am curious and a little confused (nothing new for me ) as to why you want to disable 4WD. Is this for some competition?

WoodsWagon
Why not organize a new class for 4wd compacts. You could use tercels and subies and doge colt's. It would kick a lot more arse. It's retarded to reduce a car's ability just so you can fight sentra's and escorts.
subie94
its for a demolition derby that its going to next summer imo, that's just like sending it to the scrap yard. unless the body is shot, then i'd be sneaky and use the 4wd.

SakoTGrimes
Well, you could convince the event organizers to just trust you not to push that little magic red button, so you wouldn't have to remove stuff (Demo cars should be heavier anyway, right?) Or you could scrape off all the 4WD decals and cheat, although someone with a good eye might see the rear wheels spinning.
ausubaru92
Ive always wondered how a sube would go in a demo derby, our local show has a derby but the ground is usually wet and most cars get bogged, a subaru in disguise would be awesome:brow: P.S. try to disguise a piece of railway girder behind your bumper bars, the other cars wont know what hit them:lol:

TheSubaruJunkie
Cut the button out for 4WD. They'll know your not using 4WD cause you'll be spinning out everywhere. If you want to have even MORE fun... then remove the front cvs joints and run with it in 4WD making it a true RWD car. Also, weld the rear diff before you do so you have RWD and POSI.... then KILLLLLLL ESCORTS!! -Brian

FWD you only really have to be careful to protect the front.

Frank B
If your going to be in the dirt/mud anyway, remove the front differential and weld the gears to have front posi ?! I also have removed the rear driveshaft and the car operates fine. Remove the rear differential, split the rear axle shafts and sell that stuff. Relocate the fuel pump, if your allowed. Since you'll be manuvering in reverse, the front wheel emergency brake will help you slide around and make tighter turns.

WoodsWagon
The differential is inside the transmision. It has small pinion gears inside it which let one wheel turn faster than the other on the same axel. It also lets you get stuck with one wheel spinning and the other doing nothing. If you weld the pinion gears together, it makes the front axel one piece so that both wheels have to spin to get stuck. Turning while going forwards gets harder.
