will 1996 2.2. fit into 90 legacy? issues??

Recommended Posts

My 1990 Legacy manual xmsn, bad ej22.

Found 1996 2.2L in salvadge yard mated to auto trans.

75K miles - $400. Maybe able to hear run.

Price ok?

Guy at the yard checked a reference book and stated the left head is different

for auto vs manual. Is that so? Should I be concerned?

Any surprise swapping issues?

Exhaust and intake should bolt up?

I am aware the entire sensor/ecu etc. components

will need to be used from 1990 car.

tnx

Very good price!

You will have some wiring issues as the 96 is OBD2 and the earlier is not. I don't think your original car has EGR either.

I think you can easily switch the manifold and be fine. (But I'm not sure.)

Otherwise, the engine should be "essentially" the same.

The left head IS different on a '96. In '95 they started putting an EGR pipe on that head. If you take the intake with the rest of the engine, it'll work.

Your exhaust pattern is different however. The '90-95 EJ22 was dual port exhaust: from '96 on the exhaust is single port. Won't mate up to your current y-pipe, so grab that too.

As for the ECU and wiring, it should work together ok. Use the engine wiring harness that's with the intake, and plug it into your main wiring harness. (Check the configuration of the plugs first just to be sure.) I think the ECU will work with it.

Stands to reason: you can replace an EJ25 with a '95 EJ22 thru mid-'98.

Tnx for all the info folks.

I chatted with an old grizzled buddy up north with bunch of soob experience and he stated the same concern regarding the exhaust port configuration. In additon he was wary of the 96 wye pipe fitting under the 1990 car properly.

I am not convinced I will be able to use the 96 intake and associated cables as the 90 engine connects on the left (drivers side) and the 96 is on the right.

Also the connector count not sure is the same.

The egr issue seems to necessitate going with the 96 intake.

Me thinks before I plop down the money more investigation needs to be done.

Confused a bit.

hold on there sport, i beleive the only single port heads every used on the EJ22 were in impreza cars, if the motor was from a legacy, the heads are dual port, take a look to double check. as for the EGR pipe on the new motor, grab the pipe and buy a copper plug for it and solder it on, or just kink it, then smash it so it compresses and wont let exhaust fumes through it.

The last post from Emily states all 96 to 98 2.2 are single port exhaust.

Using this motor in my 1990 I will need the exhaust system won't I?

And if so, does it still have the single oxygen sensor or duals as it seems is more common in newer vehicles? If dual "ohtoo's" then my ecu may not like the one I select.

The egr issue seems minor compared the above stuff.

Life would sure be eaiser with a good ole 1990 block.
