SUBARU3
Apparently, they used 3 different types of automatic transmissions in the Gen 1s Aisin Warner M41 Aisin Warner M41A Jatco L3N71B I thought they were all the same. Anybody have an idea on this? Thanks, Todd
NorthWet
Ummm... what kind of idea do you want? Not that I am likely to provide you with much info, but you never know.
SUBARU3
If they did indeed use 3? If these were it? Was one particular one the main one used? How can I tell which one I have? Are the 2 with the same name basically the same?

SUBARU3
Thanks for looking and your time. I'm mainly interested in 77-79. I can't seem to cross the actual trans manufacturer with the year/Part #. Todd
GLCraig
Well if this helps, the only Gen1 auto I ever scrapped out was from a 78. Execpt for the bellhousing, I could not tell a difference between it and a Gen2 2wd Auto.
NorthWet
If I were a betting man (I am not ), I would say that if you had one it would probably be the JATCO unit, as it was used in the later cars. The M41 and M41A are probably near-twins (with each other); some relatively minor refinement. (BTW, the JATCO core was used in several other Japanese cars.) Parts stores have asked me which 3AT I was buying a pan gasket for, as they are different shapes. This may be your best external distinguishing characteristic. If you take the pan off, the valve body should be marked with transmission ID.
SUBARU3
Thanks for all the info! It looks to be the Jatco. Todd
moosens
I'm pretty sure the M series was from '74 - '77 stage I.It's shown in the '74 Auto Trans SM Hope that helps. If that tranny was the "A" then I'm guessing the M41 was the Japanese version. That looks like any stage I auto that I can recall, doesn't it?
