TROGDOR!
Friend of mine needs a 2.2 for a 99 Legacy, and I've heard that this engine is totally unique and must be replaced ONLY by one from a 99 Legacy. Question... is there anything else that can be made to work without a ton of retrofitting or rewiring?
idosubaru
i sorted through 11 pages worth of searching and turned up nothing. if the intake manifold is the only difference, that would be nice as you can leave that in the car anyway to swap long blocks. i can't imagine the block or heads being different? maybe a dealer could answer this? TROGDOR!
Emily at CCR and Hollander both say it fits 1999 only. Hollander gives no info about other retrofits, and all Emily could tell me was a tentative "maybe." Seems to be kind of an iffy deal, replacing this engine with something more common. Hopefully someone in here has done it... My friend doesn't have much interest in fixing the car, and if I can get an engine for it, I may be able to buy the car super cheap and then do the work myself. Wouldn't mind going 10 years newer overnight.
idosubaru
i wasn't sure about parting out this 98 OBS, but if i do the ECU is there as well if that helps at all. i would need to know soon to get it out by this weekend, i'll be in morgantown the weekend of Jan 18th as well. ShawnW
The 99 Model year 2.2 is the PITA because it is an 8 bolt bellhousing, rear thrust block and the interference engine. Its the only year I know of that is like that.
idosubaru
8 bolt bellhousing? aren't bellhousings swappable? i'm confused on that one, as i've only pulled older model soob motors/trans. rear thrust block what is that? the 97 and 98's are interference as well (just to clarify, i realize you know that shawn!) GLCraig
The bellhousing is a part of the block casting on EJ engines. When they switched to an 8 bolt bellhousing they just added 4 holes. A transmission from with a 4 bolt will mate up.
idosubaru
so the bellhousing isn't an issue....this rear thrust thing though...what is that? never even heard of such a thing.
