My Loyale engine fun

Recommended Posts

Well, we finally got the engne on the stand last night, and boy was it fun!

We had already discovered that several T-belt teeth had come off - now we know why. The oil pump had completely seized!! So bad, that the pulley for it spun before the engine actually quit. Not positve, but the engine may have actually been run with NO oil in it. (the drain plug was not in, but someone else had actually started to work on the engine before we got to it. They may have drained the oil) Anyways, the engine sat for most of the year with no spark plugs in it, so the cyls are full of crap (on the side we took the head off of, anyways) It'll be either a J/Y swap or a full rebuild, haven't decided which yet. I'm still planning on doing the EJ-22, but I have not been able to find one to my liking yet. (hence leaning towards J/Y swap). I may also go with a CCR rebuilt, if I know I can sell it to someone when I'm done with it next year. Pictures to come!

OK. Little update.

Finally got time to do a little more work on it. Just about got the case split, but had to call it a day. With the pistons disconnected, the crank seems to turn nice. Looks like it may only need new rings and a full gasket set. And a mild port job / CC job.

OK, time for another update.

It's a full rebuild - but things aren't too bad! Crank cleaned up nicely last night with two stages of pollishing - extremely minor scratches on a couple journals - mostly just deposits from the bearings. Final pollish will be done right before assembly. Pistons are not perfect, just a little bit of scuffing on the skirts, though.

Engine has 294,000 Km on it - about 182,000 Mi. Siezed when the previous owner apparently drove it awhile with zero oil in it. So far, everything is measuring very close to stock spec - not even anywhere near wear limits.
