Transam
Hey all I am new to the board. My wife has a 98 RS. I am almost positive that it had a head gasket failure, but she said that the car made noises then quit on her. I am deployed to Iraq so I can't be too sure what is going on. What I was wondering is if there is an aftermarket place to but a new, used, or rebuilt engine in case it was blown? Thanks for any advice. lmdew
CCR Engines in Denve CO is the best rebuilder in the US. I get to SLC every once in a while, I could check it for you if you are in no rush. You might also look at http://www.nasico.com and Rocky Mountain Club and put a post there. Lots of SLC Subaru guys. Thanks for you Service! Larry (USN Ret.)

Transam
Thank you for all the advice I will check out there web site. She brought it to a local mechanic that I have dealt with before, so I am sure the diagnosis will be spot on. He just hasn't had time to look at it yet but I am pretty sure the head gasket went south, then she said it was making "noises" before it quit on her. So we will see if the engine was damaged before it quit. Thanks for the help and if anyone can chime in I appreciate it. T/A
OB99W
My wife has a 98 RS. I am almost positive that it had a head gasket failure, but she said that the car made noises then quit on her. Depending on exactly what "made noises then quit" means, besides HGs that could also describe a timing belt failure. Hopefully not, because the 2.5L is an "interference" design. How many miles are on the engine? HGs might be worth putting in if the mileage is low enough, and general condition good. If the timing belt went, or HG failure caused other engine damage, probably a replacement engine is the right move.
Transam
Well the reason I am sure that it is a head gasket is that I have had to put fluid in it on a regular basis and it must have been internal because I could never find the leak. I am in Iraq right now so I am not sure what the "noise" sounded like but I am going to have it looked at by someone that would know whether I need a new engine. I emailed ccrengines and am waiting for a reply. The best part is I can have her drive to Denver and pick it up since we live in Salt Lake. Thanks for the help so far. Okay; I hope you get home soon and can experience "noises" (and more pleasant things) firsthand.
Transam
Went to the ccr website. They quoted me for $2675.00 for the motor and shipping plus the 3 year and 36000 mile warranty. Not nearly as bad as I thought it might be. Still holding out hope that I dont need a motor but just in case thanks for the help. T/A

Transam
Well the mechanic gave it a quick look and did varify that the head gasket was leaking, but he didnt have time to dig any further into the engine. Wife said that he might get to it this week but wasn't sure. I will keep posting as i find more out. T/A
