subarus everywhere & none to drive

Help! I am the owner of a 1993 loyale that met its match with a deer just a week ago, shame on me, however I did get my horns this year:grin: . I do have one to part out if the motor isnt to far under the stering wheel to salvage. Prior to this hap, I purchased a1989 G4D SW. The man told me that some one had abandond her at a loves station and had sat for 2 years before he bought it and cleared the title ect. He SAID as far as he knew it had a over heating problem and knew nothing about the car, he bought it and parked it pretty much and was an as is deal. Most of the time I just drive em, know enough to make me dangerous- i bought it 1000.00:banghead: I drove home about 2.5 miles and by the time I got in the drive it was spitting and puking all over, or so it seemed. I (myself) changed the thermostat, was very rusty, got through that ok. In the resevor, it seems to have oil residue inside. longer story longer-it is dripping steadily antifreeze i just put back in it, from what I swear looks loike the oil pan gasket, or the casing next to it. I have studyied (and chucked to myself) the chilton ever so detailed guid to know notta about guess it if ya can. Im hoping that in that caseing is a water pump:brow: . that im not leaning towards a cracked--anything. Now according to this wonderfull book I have added my greasy fingers to, the water pump is in a total differnt place, being under the thermostat? the book shows it visable, it also showed my thermostat at the bottom and mine was on top. Im trying to do this myself, being the broke single white female that I am, have I bit off more than I can chew? Any kind suggestions of incouragement?

Welcome to the Board, you've found the best place to get info about your

car(s).

If the coolant is dripping from the front of the engine, out of the Black plastic

Timing belt cover, I would say it's the water pump. There's a weep-hole in the body of the pump, it's behind the T-belt cover. When the pump seal goes bad, it will leak coolant out of the weep hole. The water pump is located just to the right of the crank pulley, (large pulley, center of engine), as you stand in-front of the car.

There are afew other places that the coolant could leak from though. Give the engine a good look over for signs of coolant leaks. There's a few small hoses on top of the engine, there's a hose from the water pump to a metal tube that heads toward the back of the engine, where it connects to the heater hoses. The lower radiator hose goes to a metal pipe that leads to the water pump. There's an O-ring on it at the pump that can leak.

Any of those can/will leak and the coolant will find it's way to the ground. One needs to see if they can trace the leak back to it's source. The '84 BRAT I had leaked coolant, owner said bad head gasket, when I bought it. Turned out to be pin-hole in heater hose, cheap easy fix. :}

Look engine over some more and post back with findings. We'll guide you in from there......

Have you checked or changed the oil yet? This could be very important to you. If it looks like a milkshake, then yes, you have bit off more than you can chew.

This would mean a head gasket change. Most of us that have been dealing with this type of engine usually change the waterpump and timing belts, and sometimes the front crank seal at the same time. Its unfortunate that you have spent alot of money on the car already. I hope I didnt rain to hard on your new car :-\

Oh yea, it looks like it needs an oil change but I havent really drove it enough, (if that even matters ?)to froth it up, the oils dark on the stick, and the cap did have some milky stuff under it, but keep in mind this car has sat long enough that some mice had to be evicted, its not trashed out just unloved, sat long enough the wipers were rusted to the wind sheild. This guy that had it, didnt need it, he just obtained it and parked it in the country, just my luck to stumble. The inside belt--?was that the water pump belt? books in the car---- anyway wore out, water cans were in the back when he got it so it was in destress when whom ever abanoned it.pretty black underneath, but heck so is my faithfull deer loving 93 loyal, a subaru thing? no rain just reality of possibility, trial and error right Im learning about these little jewls. I saw one I would love to have yesterday, Just what I need in my line of work. It was a BaJa omg it was so me---wheres my rich uncle when I need one!! these wagons are wonderfull, but , man that was a nice piece of subaru. thanks again, Ill holler at you guys later with the next chapter.:grin:
