Another quick TD04 turbo upgrade question.....

Recommended Posts

For you guys that swapped in the TD04, I found this ad for a intercooler:

"used. couple of dings and bent fins; but what do you expect, it came of an

02. comes with the stock BOV (BOV does not have recirculating hose

attachment (that thing that connects the bov to the recirc hose)).

$30."

Is that hose something I need or can adapt? And is that a good price?

youll want that hose so that the recirculation will be complete, otherwise youll vent to atmosphere and have problems at idle i believe. ask for a pic of the ic. $30 is a great price, almost too good. i think i paid about $100 for my wrx ic.

If you want an aftermarket recirc hose, PM me. I got a Samco in blue that I don't need and I'm willing to sell it off pretty cheap. Yes 30 bucks is a good deal. I paid 115 shipped without the BOV, one part of the y-pipe was missing and I also got the hoodscoop.

You don't need to vent the BOV back to the intake, you can vent it to atmospere if you slightly crush the canister until the idle smoothens out. This will allow it to seal tighter and allow you to run higher boost. Nothing beats an adjustable BOV but the package price you have is awesome, buy it!

I recomend hooking up the bypass valve as it was intended.

when you leave it off with the stock ECM they tend to stumble between shifts or any time the the bypass opens because the air that gets dumped had already been measured by the MAF sensor. It throws off the mixture a bit and our old ECMs are not quick enough to adjust for that loss.

I was able to fabricate a hose fitting to attach onto my WRX bypass valve. Its not real complicated.

30$ is a great price. grab it.

I have not been able to explain this and I agree with you wholeheartedly however I have a BOV that vents to the atmosphere without any problems whatsoever. It makes no sense to me but I thought I'd test it and the car runs great like this. Boost is at stock pressure.

RallyRuss, I know you said 'Bypass Valve' so I'm not sure if that and the BOV is one in the same. At any rate, here is my BOV setup that I just took a pic of for this post.

I ended up venting to the atmosphere because I didn't have any room to add a hose to make it vent to the intake. The turbo to intercooler tubing is very close to the BOV. Also, I didn't want to go through the hassle of making another fitting past the maf sensor. I am lazy and unskilled.

And yes, that intercooler price seems almost too good to be true.

The BOV (blow-off valve) is the same as a bypass valve.

I vent mine to atmoshere and it ran beautifully (before doing a WOT hillclimb with a 3" split in my radiator hose, cracked head now).

I have not watched the A/F ratio but I'm sure it spikes rich for a second. I think that's a good thing if it's rich enough to "blow torch" inside the header between shifts to get that turbo spooled up more for the next gear. Pro rally cars use a similar idea but they sometimes have an injector that sprays fuel right into the header between shifts. I hear it's pretty hard on the turbo but I don't care, I want to haul arse!
