MSSLGECKO
Hey, can I run the stock EJ22 manual tranny in my EA81? I recall someone on the board was working on running the EJ tranny - how hard is it and how does it work? What axles are used? I'm thinking it might be a little easier for me to carry the tranny over w/ the engine instead of spending $$ on a clutch, adaptor, flywheel, etc. What do you think, can I do it for cheaper this way? Thanks,
NoahDL88
The axles will have to be custom, but i think that the guy from MWEAxles should be able to do it for you with little or no extra cost. You'll need the standard EA-81 axle and then the turbo EA-82 inner cup, because the splines are different on that transmission stub shaft. You'll also need a custom drive shaft, either get the legacy one shortened and weld in the carrier bearing, or go with a one piece. As far as mounting the tranny, custom mounts should be as easy as fabbing up a crossmember, so i hope you have a welder, or have a friend with one. MSSLGECKO
Thanks for knowing the axles needed. Howabout the shift linkage? Will I need a welder to make it fit? For the Xmember, could I use the stock 4SPD D/R one and weld onto it to make it work w/ stock EJ mounts?
subaru_styles
Noah....Are you saying you want to run the Awd trans behind the 2.2 in the Ea-81 car..? This is John ( aka ) mudrat79 at Brads House..on his computer If so it is very doable... Also, I can stick A custom set of 23 spline axle stubs into the AWD trans so you can run stock axles as well..... Call me on it I have a Trans at the house right now if you don't already have one....and if you do I can do the work to this one then just trade you out for tranny later...? Chat soon, John
ballitch
if you go 5 lug you wont have to get custom axles.....sorry....voice from the darkside......... ~Josh~
MSSLGECKO
John - I'll give you a call tomorrow sometime about this. Thanks for saying something, running stock axles will help keep costs down! As for the 5-lug, I've thought about it but as long as I'm able to get Peugeots, I won't need more lugs. Plus, IIRC it's hard to find any definitive information on the swap into the EA81 - most is regarding the EA82.

MSSLGECKO
i just asked this question last night, have you found out more?Yeah, just what John posted - swap the spline shafts for the proper EA82 ones - I'm going to use PB 4WD ones. Then the stock axles will work a-okay. And shorten the drive shaft to match the brat wheel base of course. I'm super stoked to find this out because I'm going to save myself a good amount of cash by avoiding the adapter plate and clutch/flywheel. I've decided that I would rather have the EJ AWD tranny than any PT EA82. The only thing that would make running an EA82 tranny for me would be if I had a D/R FT4WD from an RX.
