Shortening shifter in EA82 lifted wagons?

Recommended Posts

Hey all you modding heros! :drunk:

I am lifting an EA82 wagon and I am building a custom dash for it (to incorparte a carputer and cupholders) and I want to bring my shifter back about 3 inchs and shorter by like 2. I also wanted to shorten the D/R shifter a couple of inchs and maybe move it left a touch.

Has anyone ever attempted this before? Can I just cut and weld the shift arms?

I cut mine beneath the boot and rewelded it. Easy fix.

That was just to shorten it tho right?

I want to move mine back about 2-3 inchs also. I am tall and have my seat way back and it's a reach for the shifter in 3rd and 5th. Also I need some extra space for the dash/console I am building.

if your struggling to reach yer shifter... isnt your cupholders and screen going to be a bit harder to reach?

just being picky

just cut your linkages and sleeve them to whatever length you need and weld the sleeve into position

you might even have to cut out some of the transmission tunnel when you move it back so the shifters dont hit on anything

Yes it will be a reach for the screen prolly, but I am custom building a dash that will be coming out more then the stock one and be integrated into the console where the stereo is so it will be coming back a bit more then stock. The cup holders will probably be at a comfortable arms length. The carputer is most likely going to be for GPS so I really don't have to reach the screen much. Wireless keyboard and mouse for entry before trip starts. :)

I mainly just wondered if anyone had done it or ran into any problems with it. I may have issues with the D/R shifter and E-Brake so I can prolly only move it a little bit. I thought about the angle approach, but you would still have the same shift difference between gears. I want to shorten the gap a bit. I did a shorter shift on my daily and it works well just needs moved back a bit. :)

Maybe I shouldn't lean back. I could drive like a granny and reach it just fine.
