oldude
Hi again. Well at least my 83 EA81 2wd Sta. Wag is running. Distributor has been working so far. New problem. I noticed my guage at only 12 volts. Used to be higher..14+ After 10-15 minutes, voltage goes up. Checked belt. It is tioght. Today I started it up and not only did the guage read low, but I noticed the the gas guage also registered empty. Had 1/2 tank. After the 10-15 minutes, the voltage kicked up back to normal, and at the same time my gas guage started to work, too This board has been so helpful. Really want to thank all who have helped and wish y'all nothing but the best for this New Year.
edrach
Look for a loose connection at the battery terminals and alternator for a start. If it's not there we need to start looking for bad grounds.
Seahag1978
I'm having the opposite problem... starts out nice then sometimes drops to around 6-8. Comes back up with gas. Noticed at the onset that the radio gave a big buzz at the driver's speaker, then stopped. Voltage seems normal again... speaker is ok.
Subarian
Clean the battery terminals, even if they look good. Put a little grease on them before you put the cables back on.
Myxalplyx
Do that 'grounding mod' if you can. I have 8 gauge grounding wire going from my negative battery terminal to my maf sensor housing, a bolt on the engine, a bolt on the tranny and a bolt on the car frame near the driver's side struts. Also, I have an 8 gauge wire going from my positive battery terminal to the positive terminal of my alternator. It clears up electrical gremlins that may be due to the old age of some electrical wiring. I do this on all my subbies. It cleared up a hesitation and voltage problem I had on my 1997 Outback Sport, cleared startup/idle hesitation problem on my AWD XT6 and a small idle problem after cams installation on my FWD XT6. Weird but it works! My RX turbo already had it setup similar to this when I purchased it which may explain why I haven't had any drivability problems with it for a year. Seahag1978
Hmmm... I do have some hesitation too, and when I'm in 4th and romp on it it goes nowhere. Do you have a picture of the grounding fix? Thanks!
oldude
For once a simple fix. Cleaned and tightened battery connections. All is well Thanks to all who responded. Wish all fixes were so easy
