Phizinza
i need advise on how is the best way to attach the exhaust to a EA81. I've got cheapo gaskets and want to make the seal good. It takes to long to get the good ones. In the pa t I've used exhaust putty that sets like concrete. But it doesn't seem to last. Any ideas? Mr. Carb
bolt the exhaust on good and tight, works as long as the head studs arn't stripped.
ausubaru92
I made my gaskets thicker by wrapping them in several layers aluminium foil. When i re-welded my flanges on, one of them wasnt completly flat, and this way helps fill in the gap. Gannon
Phizinza
so you are using foil as gasket sealent. Sounds like it might work well. I've heard of using RTV silicon, anyone done that? surly the temp of exhaust would be too much for it?
Dylan86GL10
use the orange copper rtv. it'll basically burn but the residue is the seal. i've never used it on the y pipe but have on turbo wastegates for many other cars. looks like miles fox uses it too:
Phizinza
I gave the foil a go. Seems to still make leaking noise but I can't feel the exhaust coming out anywhere around the flanges. I think where the Y pipe joins theres a leak. I'll have to look into it more. Any other ideas?
86subaru
a very good shop , told me to use honda gaskets , but which model i am not sure, i stripped my threads on 1 side and finally got it , but the other side blew again, 88 turbo
TomRhere
My bet would be that there's pin-holes in the Y-pipe. Can't see them due to the heat-shield covering the pipe, but you'll probally find them if you removed the shielding. I removed the shielding from an old Y-pipe and found a bunch of pin-holes along with quite a few cracks in the pipes. Way to many holes and cracks to bother trying to save it, so I made my own exhaust. I gave the foil a go. Seems to still make leaking noise but I can't feel the exhaust coming out anywhere around the flanges. I think where the Y pipe joins theres a leak. I'll have to look into it more. Any other ideas? Meeky Moose
the non turbo exhaust manifold gaskets are paper with the metal ring , correct? now the good ones are the turbo exhaust manifold gaskets which are made like a headgasket.. just order some for like a 88 gl-10 turbo wagon or something.. thats what i do they last alot longer hehe or if you wanna use a sealant get some fujibond from the dealer.. i know it'll hold up to just about anything, i used fujibond once for a basegasket on a carb cause i couldn't get a new one in a pinch, that was almost a year ago and the car still has fujibond in place of the basegasket, hehe.. onl;y thing is you gotta heat the fujibond up to get it to cure all the way, it won't just cure sitting there
wintersubaru
When i had a warped flange i put two gaskets on that side and used hi temp copper silicone never leaked again. Allso used hi temp silicone on a volvo exhust manifold and that had no gasket and it never leaked. As long as its under compresion it wont leak. edrach
Find someone in the US who can get you OEM gaskets and mail them to you. The cost of gaskets is pretty low and air mail would get to you within a week I would guess. i need advise on how is the best way to attach the exhaust to a EA81. Phizinza
Ok. Theres a problem for just about every reply here. First. I have a Dual carb motor. Bigger exhaust outlets, bigger gaskets. The gaskets I am using are like two sets of perforated tin with some gray stuff that compresses in between. I also don't have any heat shielding as I have a custom 2" pipe (1 3/4 form heads going to 2" after they join) Thanks for the help anyhow. I am going to mostlikly get a EJ and use totally different exhuast. And this engine and exhaust will go in a rally car setup classic style. So I think I might just let it leak and hope it doesn't get any worse. Thanks again.
