SakoTGrimes
Recently going from 1st to 2nd is grinding bad unless I do it careful and slowly. Can I buy a syncrho? It's a little rubber thing, right?
ballitch
the synchros in manual trannys are little "rings" that are in between the gears to match the next gears speed better than with no synchros. i odnt know if there is a fix for this, i have it also, only when i peel out does it grind, otherwise its just fine. if you caught it early enough you might be able to change your tranny gear oil with some lucas oil additive. use one quart lucas oil add. and the rest use some GL-5 rated 75-90w synthetic gear oil. and give it a tenth of a second or so for the synchros to match easier. ~Josh~
NoahDL88
It seems a lot of guys here swear by the Rislone engine treatment in the tranny's. If that dosn't work and you don't want to replace the gearbox just yet, you can always double clutch.
scrap487
i also here about some valvoline redline synth gear oil or something like that... dont know much about it but try searching, it is expensive tho... I dont know about subarus, but I assume they're the same as everything else, syncros are usually these brass rings that have a beveled edge that leads up to the teeth and matches up with the gear... best way to preserve them is using the right oil, and double declutching. I'll attach some pics of the guts of a transmission out of a 5spd nissan 720. the reason the input shaft is weird is cause the needle/pilot bearing went. scrap487
replacing syncros sounds like its a little above your head, for you its probably better, faster and cheaper just to replace the whole transmission... when you do that you should give the old one to me
85Sub4WD
I thought I had the same problem Mobil 1 75w90 saved me the trouble it is expensive, and it takes about a month to feel the effect, but it does work I have heard that redline is another good alternative
ballitch
one problem is the fact that no-one probably has spare synchros for your trannys, and if they do, they wont be had for cheap. i'd like new synchros in my tranny, get it back to factory-like smoothness. ~Josh~
SakoTGrimes
Well, I'm only going to have this car for another 8 months at the most, so 'spensive oil and super slow shifting will have to do.
