What are the main differences between Gen1 and Gen 2 Brats?

I have just purchased an '85 Brat, and it seems to have a fuel shortage problem at high RPM when under a load (up hills). Some say the Brat has 2 fuel filters and that often the rear one by the gas tank never gets changed out. Anyone know about this? The thing runs great on the flat or downhill....and only has 40,000 miles on an Attarco import installed last year.

thanks

Whenever I buy a used car, there are a few things I do to it just to make sure everything's OK. Hoses, belts, a tune-up (unless I know it's been done recently), oil & filter change, fuel system cleaner, and fuel filters. Basically all the stuff that would leave you stuck on the side of the road. I get anal with this and buy an extra fuel filter and stick it in the car with whatever tools I need to change it on the side of the road. That has come in handy several times.

For the tune-up part, don't forget to change plug wires every 100K miles.

Gen 1 Brats ran from 78-81 and gen 2's from 82-87. Gen 2 Brats are a little wider, a little longer, and the GL models have T-tops. The Gen 1 Brats all had ea71 engines except for the 81 GL models which had the ea81, as well as a Dual range 4wd. ALL gen 2 Brats had ea81's.

McBrat has published the differences between gen 1 and 2 multiple times. Try a search on it. There are 2 filters on the gas line - 1 by the tank underneath, and 1 under the hood in front of the driver. You might check the distributor to see if the weights in it move freely. If they are frozen or stiff, you may not be getting the spark you need at high speeds. A shot or 2 of wd40 may be your salvation.
