converting AWD Manual to AWD Automatic

i want to convert my AWD XT6 manual trans to an automatic AWD. issues:

 

wiring is probably not in place, but i have two auto AWD parts cars.

anyone know if the wiring is a matter of taking out the automatic AWD wiring and installing it in another chassis or is it completely intertwined with the existing engine wiring? i would think the engine wiring should almost stand alone since it's the same across manuals and autos.

 

then i could also use the stock center diff lock button and instrument cluster DIFF LOCK light instead of the switch/light i installed.

 

driveshaft, TCU, center console, pedal assembly (which i hate..) should be straight forward.

 

tips, hints, suggestions, ideas appreciated.

all subarus i've seen have EVERYTHING wired together in the same harness, and different harnesses going to different parts of the car - so it will be a bit time consuming to seperate the harness out if you are planning on doing so

 

I don't think the 4EAT allows for a manual lock mode in stock form - but I don't know those trannies well, so I may be wrong - even if it does not come with a manual lock ability, you could still probably bypass the TCU to lock the tranny manually - though you would probably generate error codes

i already have a switch to lock the rear transfer clutches which is essentially the same thing. it would be cool to use the Center Diff button and the instrument cluster DIFF LOCK light in place of my existing radio shack switch and custom mounted LED.

 

hhhmmmm...wiring. we'll see, luckily i have a parts car and my old daily driver auto which has now become a parts car so i can have a look at it.

since i would imagine that subaru made two harnesses, one for manuals and one for autos. that way they dont have to put all the auto wirng into all the manual cars, makes for better profit margine :brow: . hate to say it, but unless you strip all the tcu wiring from the XT6 parts car, and "graft" it onto your manual car's wiring. but like previously stated, some of those wires are bound to go to other parst of the car, like the back, so you would need to strip all the interior of both cars so you car make sure that you didnt miss any of the wires. what is wrong with your auto parts car? if its got a bad motor, why not just swap motors and car it good?

220,000 miles, rusted very bad all over the place, every body panel just about is compromised in some way. body is shot. motor is locked up (hit some firewood on the freeway). time to move on, body is terrible and extensive drivers side door/rear fender damage from a little fun in the snow. i hate body work, i'd rather start with something decent and no rust.

 

i have an auto parts car with the interior already completely stripped, so it'll be easy to at least track down the wiring to see how ugly it is.

 

thanks alleyboy, i have the FSM's as well...i might need help translating them though if i look at them!

well if youre only going to have to strip one car's interior that may not be a bad thing to do. but if you want to route the wiring the "factory" way, your going to have to pull the dash and all that junk, but you were going to do that anyway for the pedal box install. this certainly is no small undertaking you want to accomplish.

would he really need to swap pedel boxes? why not just disconnect/remove the clutch pedel? - there is no need for the larger brake pedel from the auto - if it is like the EA82 cars, it should not be too difficult to pull the dash either for that matter - dunno for sure about the dash tho because I am not an XT/XT6 guy

 

personally, I would graft the harness - but that's just me - seperating the harness out is a time consuming, but relatively easy process. That is how I did my SPFI conversion

I think the conversion will be difficult, but very do-able

 

the FSM suppliment has almost all the wiring harness routing info, just before the system diagrams - it is a VERY valueable resource
