Suspension Question

Recommended Posts

Hey all. The noob has arrived. I have a problem with my suspension. I just bought an 85 Subaru GL with the EA82T engine and 4WD. The car has air suspension but it is bottomed out after sitting for a year. I'm not sure if the compressor is still in the car or not but I am going to check later tonight. My question is, one of the connections for the passenger side air shock is gone and I am wondering if there is a way to repair it or do I have to buy a new shock/strut? The air line is still there but the connector that goes to the compressor is gone. Any replies will help. Thanks.

Find someone stripping a car in WA.. there are lots of them. Or go to a good yard.

Buy all four corners, regular strut/spring combo.

Install in place of air suspension.

Less than 2 hours (less than one if you have done it before) and you are back on the road.

Air ride is the debbil. waaayyy more work than it is worth.

I am trying to keep the car as factory as possible. If that is the best option I will do it. If I do go with the standard shock/struts, what do I do about the car's computer activating the air system when I activate the 4WD? Is there any way to disable that or just ignore it and let it think it is working correctly?

Just unpulg the compressor. I've never seen a car with that pneumatic crap that didn't go down overnight, making the first 5 mins of driving in the morning rather.....uncomfortable. Just not worth it.

If you want height control, find one with the other setup that uses springs as usual, and just pumps the height up a wee bit when you hit the "hieght control" button. They tend to be much better lasting.

air suspension is expensive.. i just bought my GL-10 the other day, it has air suspension that was just replaced 5 months ago at 1200 for all 4 corners installed... fortunately the previous owner picked up the tab.. had it been my decision i would have gone to a standard spring setup.
