I've got a '91 Legacy Turbo and it seems my mileage is quite low. For a full tank of gas, if I let it go right down past the "E" mark, I just get about 400-450kms (250miles). I don't drive it (too) hard and generally keep it about 100km/h or 2500rpm on the highway. Most of my driving is in town, though when on a 3200km trip over Christmas, my mileage did improve somewhat. Is this "normal" or to be expected for this age of car? I think it's got the 2.2l engine in it and power everything - and it all mostly still works! However when I fill up it only takes about 40 to 45 litres. The tank is 60 litres in size but the gauges on these cars are known to read low. 10 L/100 km (24 mpg US) is average from what I hear which is what I get in the city. On a long trip last fall I averaged 8.2 L/100 km (29 mpg US) (White Rock, BC to Sunpeaks and back, 2 high mountain passes and cruise set at 120 kph.) Chef Posted January 28, 2006 Share Posted January 28, 2006 |You certainly aren't getting poor mileage for a turbo legacy - they are quite bad on gas. about 17 mpg city if you drive nice and 22-24 highway. I've seen trucks that get better mileage. Subarus are simply gas guzzlers. Even the FWD models are pretty piggish due to weight and the boxer engine. But they're cool... Just wasn't sure as I've never driven a car before where you can actually see the gas gauge spiral downwards! It's not a TDI, but it drives better in the snow than the TDI does! zyewdall Posted January 30, 2006 Share Posted January 30, 2006 Yeah, I wish they made a TDI subaru too... but they don't, so I have a summer and a winter car. I average 27mpg in my subaru ('89 GL), but I think turbo ones are lower, plus the legacy is a heavier car. Speaking of gas guages spireling... I loved it when a friend and I went to pick up a small gas engined bus. Driving back, after I had filled the tank on the bus about 3 times, he told me he could see that the guage on his TDI was starting to move..... 50mpg vs 5.5mpg....
