splines on wheel hub stripped ?

Recommended Posts

Last night I was driving down a mild trail with some slushy snow on it there was only mild slippage but the splines on the axle or the hub or most likely both just stripped out on the passenger side front. I have never heard of this happening before. Iwas thinking that since the axle is probably stripped anyway I might try to drill a hole through the hub and the axle and tap a roll pin in until I can get the axle and hub replaced. If this has ever happened to any one and they have some good advice on how to fix or prevent this problem feel free to let me know

Actually its a common problem. When the cone washer and flat washer wear out you can no longer get the axle tight in the hub. The only remedy for this is another hub. I dont know about drilling thru both hub and axle, thats alot of metal and its got to be perfectly sttraight. Less hassle to get another hub.

Yup. Happens fairly often I guess. The hub strips out and the axle is still okay. I drove my GL for about 100 miles in rwd when I stripped the front left hub, till I could get a new one from the junkyard. Tighten the axle nut as tight as you can possibly get it is the only way to prevent it that I've heard of.
