Durania
Welcome to the board. I'm not familiar with Brats of your vintage. Post pics, though. Yea its a shame that they quit making them here. All we have is a good BAJA. (Still own one of them to)
FlyB0y
welcome! your very lucky to have that model of brat still available to you ... last time they made them in the US was 1987 ... I have a '85 brat but it has a 1.8 ... what is the stamp on your engine? it should say EA71 if it is the 1.6 and EA81 if it is the 1.8 ... the stamp should be located on the front of the engine on the left side just below the air filter ... and yes I would also LOVE to see some pics!
abns
the engine is 1.6 and if im not mistaken ea 71 the model looks exactly the same as 89 just made in 93 same body and engine mine is 2x4 if anyone can help with what i can do to improve the engine strength or feel or anything at all that can impove the car. i would like to know if an open air filter could help or damage the car and if one can be installed on this type engien and also if i can change the carburetor... again any help will be very aprecieated thanks
LPGsuperchargedBrumby
ea81 and 4wd conversion would at least make your brat perform the same as those in the rest of the world. a high flow air filter (K&N etc) shouldn't harm your motor, although you might have to rejet the carburetor. some ea71's came factory with twin carbs
Jack in Norfolk
just out of curiosity, did the brats in Israel have seats in the back after 85?
GeneralDisorder
No Brat outside the US had rear seats. They were actually installed as a final assembly stage once they came off the ship. You could put a Weber 32/36 DGV carb on the EA71. Weber makes a kit with the appropriate adaptor. Won't get much if anything from a different air filter.... especially with the stock exhaust. Replace the exhaust and put a larger carb on for starters. Anything beyond that requires engine tear-down to get in a more agressive cam or change the comp. ratio. But if you are going for that, then get a 1.8L instead and start with that. GD
Phizinza
here in australia we got the Brumby (Brat) up until 94. Although we only got 4x4 EA81's (from 81 to 94) no 2x4 (never even thought they maid 2x4.) i hear the EA71 is quite good with power. But EA81 will be better. And should fit right in. custom 2 or 2.5 inch exhuast should be nice. weber with a pod filter would be good too. Then theres big changers that can be done. Like EA82t, EJ2xbut they all require extensive wiring loom modification.
abns
i feel real bad for not knowing anything and asking silly questions... i know that here in israel changing the motor to 1.8 is not allowed and they are very difficult with thes things unless you got lot of $$$$$ however from what i understand your advic would be to change the exaust to 2 or 2.5 and the carb to webber can someone give me a short brief to understand what a different exaust would ad to the car and what 2 or 2.5 means and same for the carb now say i put a differnt exaust and carb would an air filter also be recommended.... can i buy the air filter and carb over the net ? i read somewhere something about the webber kit that it is intended for automatic choke and the choke in my car is manual thanks again for the help and im happy i joined this forum
Phizinza
As for the exhuast: 2 to 2.5 inch. Stock pipe is about 1.3inch I think (?) So increassing the size of the pipe makes for better flow which makes the engine turn over easier. Weber Carby: This will also increse the flow thru the engine. It will supply more feul and it will supply it better. As in, it will be more accurate and give a better feul air mixture. New air filters are always good. Foam filters are pretty much the best if you clean and oil them regulary. Pod filters are good too. But if you like in a dusty inviroment you will probably want to either just use the stock filter box, or use a box around your after market filter. Other wise you'll be cleaning it more then once a month. I don't know much about the weber carbies though. Someone else might beable to help there. Hey, everyone has to start somewhere. Ask anything you want. So weird that you say its 4x2... Never heard of that in a 80's style brat. Maybe you might beable to get the 4x4 rear end and gearbox. Then find yourself a mud hole and have some fun. Good luck. __________ little Brat http://www.offroadingsubarus.com
torxxx
he can't put a 1.8 in it, but could he bore the cylinders? There arent any EA71's alive up here in the arctic where I live. Whats the difference in the EA71 and 81? both are pushrod engines correct? Fuel Air Spark Exhaust Better carb, biggest exhaust free'r flowin air filter, and I was gonna say coil, but those engines have points don't they? Phizinza
EA71's look almost the same as EA81's. Both are pushrod engines. So its pretty much just an extra 200cc __________ little Brat www.offroadingsubarus.com
torxxx
so is it possible to bore a EA71 upto 1800cC?
Phizinza
Dunno, but somehow I don't think so. I think it still uses totally different block and heads. They just look the same. You could probably go to 1.65L? maybe. But, I've only ever seen one once at a junk yard. __________ little Brat www.offroadingsubarus.com
