What do you think? should i replace my engine?

Well here is my situation.

I have a blown head gasket, it needs to be replaced and i also need to probably reseal everything. (and even then who knows how bad my heads are warped) I can either let richierich do it for near a grand or more. OR should i get a new engine from CCR? i dont have too much engine experience. I know i can do a engine swap but I am afraid of messin somethin up if i try and do the head gasket and reseal myself. Not only that i would probally take too long on it since i have no idea on how to do it. Time and money is something i both do not have. so considering i am going to get this fix i most likely will be getting in to some debt. considering that either way i go i will be in debt should i just purchase a new engine and be reassured with the three year warrenty? Or should i hope the best and get my seals and head gasket replaced on the engine i have, and hope nothing else goes wrong in the next three years? Give me your opinions please. tell me what you would do? I really need to start on this and get it done. taking the bus and walking is not to much fun.

thanks,

Fellow soobie enthusiast danny

P.S. if anyone has step by step instructions on how to do the reseal and head gaskets please pm me and let me know. thanks

Headgaskets are easy, dunno about the reseal. Grab yourself a full service manual. They're great!

but if you still can't do it yourself or don't want to. I'd spend that money on a new engine.

As for the EJ. you will need a adaptor plate for the gearbox, wiring loom, mounts. If you don't want to do a head gasket, don't go down the path of an EJ

Do it yourself - these engines aren't that hard to work on - if you use OEM gaskets, have the heads resurfaced, and follow the instructions in the Factory Service Manual you won't need to worry about future failure (if it is not turbo) the total cost for parts will probably be well under $500 - versus CCR's new engine

Man - where are you shopping? Last I checked EA82 HG's were $35, and heads are like $40 each to have resurfaced. You'll need the O-ring for the heads too, so another couple dollars. That's around $200 in parts figuring an ample amount for various fuilds and RTV and stuff. You may not even need to resurface the heads. Check them with a straightedge first.

You'll need at the least a metric socket set with a good selection of deep sockets, and extensions. And access to a torque wrench for the head bolts. The process isn't that difficult if you follow the directions carefully. Depending on your skills you may want to seek some assistance from a friend with some experience as you will need to remove the timing belts and put them back on. The timing procedure isn't difficult, but it confuses people the first couple times.

If you want help, I'm close to you it looks like. I've done HG's more times than I can remember. Tow it to my place and we'll do it in an afternoon.

Wait - is this an EA82 or EA81? Doesn't matter I've done both. EA81 is easier.

EA82 headgaskets are easy to do. i'd replace the head gaskets depending on mileage and how bad it overheated before you finally quit driving it. they aren't hard to do in my oppinion but i'm familiar with cars. no special tools required.

you can usually score EA82 engines for $200 or less, so if you can swap an engine out yourself (easy if you have a lift) then at least look for an EA82. then you'd be done for $200 or less. fix your other and hold it, sell it or sell the parts off of it.

swap an EJ22 is probably not what you want to do. requires wiring, ECU and custom work that will cost $. if you can do it all yourself that's great, but locating one cheap and doing it yourself aren't what i would call 'easy', but yes it is possible.

thanks everyone for the replys and helpful suggestions! i think i am just going to do the HG's and keep the motor i have. considering that its just a baby. it only has 180,000 miles on it. Where could i find a EA-82 for $200? i have called all of the junk yards i know of and i only found one for $500. I think myself, Generaldisorder and a friend will tackle the project on Sat. hopefully i will be up and running in no time!
