beattyscott
hi all, I have a 92Legacy AWD sedan and I recently had the front half-axles replaced because of the classic clicking sound was getting louder when cornering. When driving out of the shop, it was much better. However; within a couple weeks some similar clicking has returned but now its upon acceleration and up-hills. Does anyone think this has to due with: 1) the half axles/CVs were refurbished, rather than new to save cost (ie has anyone had problems with refurb axles/CVs??) 2) a poor job of installation 3) another non-CV related issue And lastly can anyone suggest some troubleshooting tips? Thanks!!
edrach
I't suggest going back to the shop that did the work and have them check it out. It's not unusual for refurbs to fail shortly after install (search for similar posts). New axles are not cost effective; two good sources for axles are www.cvaxles.com or ccrinc in Colorado. bart2546
I JUST HAD almost the similar problem in my 95 impreza. I had them replaced one day, on a friday, and that night a snapring in the CV joint itself was faulty and it seperated from the rest of the half shaft soooo I had no car all weekend long, had it towed back to the shop and my mechanic replaced it with another one free of charge in one day, it was just the fact that it was a faulty snap ring so I'd go with the idea of taking it back to the shop first before any type of warranty might expire, and I'll give you the same advice that was given to me on here, if your mechanic won't replace it/back up his work for free, find a new mechanic. Good Luck Regards, Brandon Bartolomucci
beattyscott
Thanks for the support fellas. I took it into the shop (canadian tire - yes i cheaped out) and the mechanic apparently drove it around and couldn't find the click, so did nothing. I then drove him around and showed him the knocks on acceleration and up hills. He said he'll order in some more axles and replace them again (however I have no control on where he gets the axles from b/c its under warranty), so hopefully the problem gets fixed. I won't be using canadian tire again. I'll letcha know what happens. -S
beattyscott
The mechanic replaced the drivers side axle again under warranty and its quiet and smooth on accel and hills. Thanks again for the support. Glad i persisted. Cheers, Scott

idosubaru
glad you got it fixed. i had a "new" axle from random CV joint place blow out in a week or so as well. for future reference, rebuilt axles are definitely risky and not worth any savings. as a matter of fact the cheapest (and best) route to fix them is to buy a used axle. the OEM axles are very resilient and well made, a used axle with good boots is the best solution really and cheap. well new OEM axles or MWE (CCR links) mentioned above are the best.
