morning folks

got a problem im hopin the pros here can help me with, at my wits end trying to figure this out

mines a 93 legacy wagon with 200,000 that i simply love to death

the other morning i started it up and i had this really odd noise coming from under the hood, sounded like a coffee can full of marbles

i stopped the engine and checked the oil, knowing full well it was not the oil.

i decided to start it again , let it warm up for 15 minutes and the noise 98 % went away. i drove to work fine

at lunchtime, it wouldnt kick over, at 4:30 it started and drove home fine

next morning, nothing, wont start and still cant get it started.

what i have

2.2 dohc

a very healthy crank

spark from 1 and 4

good compression

gas flow from the lines

it wont start with starting fluid thru the "fat hose intake thingy"

plugs are dirty, but not unlike any ive ever seen before that ive pulled out

im thinkin electrical at this point, some type of switch, but i cant attach that to the noise, if the noise is even part of why this happened or just coincedence ?

i was going to try to take the edge cover off the timing belt to peek inside

but im hoping that's a last resort

anybody have any ideas on something else i can check

been reading this board for the last few days, excellent info ive gained here

thanks in advance

Gino

When it started at the 4:30 start - what was that like? And when you drove it home - what about the noise and performance?

also, good maintanence history on the car? O2 and other sensors replaced?

I dunno

I guess I would look to make sure the timing belt isn't broken. Just take one of the side covers off, I think it is 3-4 10mm bolts.

I would also check to see if there is spark when you are cranking the engine. You might hafe to buy an ignition tester from a parts store. If there is no spark then I would look at the coil, ignitor, crank sensor and cam sensor. You will need a multimeter to test these. A repair manual would help with these tests.

Other thought might be the fuel pump, but you said there is fuel present so that might be ruled out.

I would check the timing belt first then check for spark at eack cylinder.

Good luck

From my experience if the timing belt is broke then it will crank noticeably faster which I attribute to the reduction of the resistance since the cam, valves & related linkage does not turn. Have you noticed such effect during cranking? You can also check for compression & suction w/ a spark plug removed (compression gauge or finger).

Not sure about the "can full of marbles" but it may indicate something broken internally. Did you notice any loss of power or other symptom that last day you drove it?
