Engine Oil Debate?!

Hi All,

 

I have a 92 Loyale that suffered from the "clacking engine" problem. Following this groups advice I used "Marvelous Mystery Oil" and (for the winter) added a light weight oil (5w30)

 

Now I wonder that the oil may be too thin and that many of you

suggest 20w50 as the heavier oil will help the oil pressure, and the MMO will thin it down to be just right.

 

QUESTIONS:

 

What's the best oil weight to use?

What's the best brand?

How much MMO is enough?

Can I use MMO at each oil change?

I have a loyale that also has the ticking/clacking noise and I think that 15w40 or 10w40 works the best, though I havn't tried anything heavier. I actually switch brands of the oil-additive stuff, using a quart at each change, and they all seem to work pretty well.

I would strongly recommend that you DO NOT use any additives. Any engine oil is already a complex cocktail of basestock and additives. There is no reason to mess with this balance.

 

Stick to one brand per change, and just find out what viscosity range stops the clacking. Higher than 10w-XX is probably not a good idea for winter use, your pump will be stressed at cold starts.

I like Castrol GTX, hate Penzoil, use Chevron mostly... and don't seem to notice a difference unless it is synthetic, then my car eats it like I drink coke...

 

I've used 4 quarts 20w50 with half a quart (16oz) of MMO, and this seams to be a popular one... mostly for the EA82 boys with weird lifter/oil pump problems.

Not to pee on your claim, Setright, but I have stood by a single type of oil through many changes, and used about every level of viscosity that they provide (Castrol GTX), and the lifter noises still ensued. It wasn't until I tried oil additives that they stopped ticking. After a complete head job/ oil pump overhaul, the noises came back yet again, and once again, oil additive was the only stuff that completely ridded the noise

Quaker 10/30 and MMO in the '00 (145,000 miles). No switching around, oil and filter changes at 4,000. Both engines run dead quiet ('cept the mild piston slap when starting the 2.5L, and five seconds of starting lifter rattle in the GL). Oil is prolly leaking down out of the galleries overnight in Klack.

 

Course, I DO have the advantage of a heated garage, which I believe does more to keep a northern states engine alive than anything!
