gl upgrades

Recommended Posts

so this is my first post...the search was a little confusing so here goes.

i have a 87 carbed gl, not sure the displacement yet but it is defiantly carbed. is there any cheap way to get power out of the engine.

my car is a...well i'm the second owner, it was owned by a nice old lady who kept ontop of all repairs and stored the car in the garage. interestingly the car has the two speed transfer case (hi-low) plus an upgraded subaru stereo (tape with equalizer, doesn't work so well anymore though)

anyways my dad works at a subaru dealership but no one that i've seen has any experience with modding this car or any soobby of this year...

cheers

You have a 1.8L engine.... either an EA81, or EA82 depending... is this a Hatchback (called a "Chaser" up there), or a wagon or what? Does it have a 4 speed or a 5 speed trans?

Get a Weber DGV series carb, and put on a little better flowing muffler... short of getting into the engine internals, or swapping to a newer, bigger engine there's not a big list of mods for it really.

You have the dual range tranny, so your gearing isn't really condusive to speed either. You could change out the tranny with a turbo 5 speed - they had a lower diff ratio, so a bit sportier.

The better idea would be to lift it and find a fun mudhole....

i have a 4 door sedan...with a 5 speed, everything is like new right now so i'm trying to decide how deep i want to get into this. right now i have a nissan pulsar/exa prodject on the go so i'm also trying to decide if i want to sell that and put money into this.

like i said the car is like new so i'm not yet sure that a mud hole is the way i want to go just yet btw it has 200 000km and 85% was highway

Then you have the EA82 overhead cam engine. 1.8L

They make 95 HP stock.

The Weber, and a decent muffler will net you another 5 or 10 perhaps. There is a turbo version of the same engine (different compression ratio, heads, fuel injection, tho, so it's not just a bolt on) that was around 115 stock. Subaru rally cars of the vintage were putting out about 175 or so on that engine.

This is not a "performance" car - it was designed to get you there in safety (4WD), and econemy.

but with money and time, it can be made into a high performance car!

But right now, I'm sitting at $5,000 into my '89 RX turbo with mods out the wazoo and its still not on the road. Just ran outta time right now.

If you put a Weber on it like GD said, it will also increase your throttle response too. You can get cams reground from Delta Cams IIRC but I don't know fi they do NA cams. Those will run about $120 plus your cores but like I said, I know they do turbo cams but I'm unsure about carbed cams.
