NewToMe 86 GL-10 Sedan Turbo!

Recommended Posts

Okay I just got me a sweet two tone Soob for 300 bucks. And it runs. No spare, no jack, I got electric problems out the wazoo. My gas line disconnected the first day and I lost a good bit of gas afore I figure it out. I has a high pop on the stroke some times and its got a holy exhaust that gets the passenger heady. But I still love it.

Questions questions.

I have a BUNCH of loose wires under the hood. mainsly right infront of the drivers side under the hood I have a few harness connects that are big and important looking. And not connected. I have a CV? boot that is cracked (the rubber thing on the way to the wheel) and I dont have any tools to my name because I just moved.... I havent been able to change my liscence plate even.

What should I check out on this car? What goes wrong with this model? How do I get a compression check for free? Does anyone live in the white salmon Hood river area who likes to work on soobs?

Talk to me!

Your noobie soob owner

welcome and wow what a way the start outta the gate eh?

:burnout:

lets start a little slower, for the moment shall we?

Okay there is a group of wires next to the windshield wiper motor, above the brake master cylinder.

there will be (should be) a portion of it that goes down to the tranny with a couple of the one and two wire connectors.(right folks?)

Now the next thing is giving a few more specs.

year

we know its a Brat :brow:

shall I assume its Carb'd?

is it an auto or manual tranny?

2WD or 4WD?

that front CV can wait a WHILE LETS GET YOU ALL WIRED UP FIRST.

DOES IT IDLE WELL? (oops caplock)

Does it start solid?

any signs of leaking anywhere or dare i assume its a grimee dirty motor with X miles on it?

(puts the "taslking stick" back in its holder)

Steve.. umm... its a turbo GL-10 like ours are..:D

Maybe you could take some pics of exactly what is disconnected.. someone here ought to recognize it.

Good score BTW.. my first turbowagon also came my way for 'wiring problems'.. it had to do with improper connection of those 2 big important looking connectors on the drivers side between the battery and the strut tower.

those loose connectors by the front drivers side corner, there should be 2 or 3, those are diagnostics clips and dont go to anything.

what trans do you have? my wagon is an 87 gl-10 with turbo and 5spd.

yours being an 86, you would have a points type distributor with a standalone knock unit, wheras my 87 has the optical type dist with the crank angle sensor, and works with the ecu.

you can tell by looking at the dist. cap, does it have sctews or clips? 2 wires to the coil or a big white(or black) clip?

i cant think of anything else that is 86 specific, except for the wiper switch being where the fan switch is on 88, the headlight switch being where the hazard button is on 88, and orange instrument cluster

and the windshield washer nozzles are under the hood.

Okay lets see If I get all this right. I am skipping the clips screw thing for now on the distributor because the car is parked a few blocks away this is a library computer and I might lose it ! Umm it has the orange dash. I have a car layout on the far right of it turbo in the top left (which never comes on) I have a car temp gauge that sometimes works (goes out usually after I drive a bit) fuel gauge likes to go to empty for no reason. (even on flat straights and such) after a bit of driving my height button start flashing and the little side-view-mycar-icon starts looking like its jumping up and down. A neat effect but probably not what they were going for. As far as I can tell the height button does nothing but change the icon. (no car changes physically). The parking brake light likes to flicker and stay on some times. Speed seems to work well (havent been arrested yet) My liscence plate light is out (ithink thats just bulbs though because the fuse is good however they did some work on the rear electrics from the looks of my missing plug/pins made of plastic holding the panel in the trunk. Hrmm. plate on the door says 85 but thats usual for an 86 eh? The car really hums along and I have no want for more power.

As for under the hood WHEW I think those must be diagnostic links. They seem to big and important to accidently be missing all the wires that should be hooking up to them ::chuckle:: I do have a few (maybe two wire as I rembmer) diving down pretty quick that ARE connected.

I would really like to see my thermostat working. The people who owned my car afor me hooked up an analog oil pressure gauge which seems to work great and a temp gauge which doesnt work at all. The digital sometimes work so I think they didnt mess with the analog temp hookup. But who knows. I have a small wire shooting off my positive terminal on my battery.. I will get a haynes or chiltons soon. I currently am holding a how to keep your subaru alive book. Which i am still reading through. Hrmm White salmon Washington is in the gorge. Its one hour east of vancouver washinton. Right across the columbia river from Hood River, which is one hour east of Portland oregon. I also have girlfriends family in Corvallis oregon. ::shrug::

I found out more about the evolution of the Soob engine and basic design from the how to keep your soob alive book and am pleased to find out they thought it was a very easy to operate mechanically engine design derived from the vw set up (with the obvious differences) I am very interested at getting more able to repair my own car and would love to be able to service/swap complicated engine and tranny troubles.

Thanks for all the great responses.

I will see what I can do about pictures.

Ciao:bday:

Joshua

Forgot, Its a five speed manual, and I dont know if its a swapped engine. it has leaks (oil I think) not bad and it appears to be seals (err gaskets) its pretty thick under there but it doesnt seem to drip much not sure what rate I am loosing it. I dont notice startup smoke. It starts great. Idles well. Sometimes a bit slow 650 rpm and such ::shrug::
