EA82t Vortex XT Queries

Recommended Posts

Alright, so after getting the oil level back down to where it should be, new battery terminals and some injector cleaner with fresh gas.

Very little to no smoke, very little hesitation as experienced, still looks funny, but rather hard starting occationally and an ECS light which we assume is teh check engine one?

A definate inprovement over our prior troubles.

But what is causing our slight hard starting and check engine light?

Is the pvc(?) system full of oil and crap still and needs more thrashing?

I think its getting better with each blat down the street though.

Any comments or suggestions welcome.

EDIT: Its a 1986 Vortex XT Turbo 4wd

The repair manual for this site has a code chart for finding out why the CEL is on.

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/USRM2/subrepair.htm

under "Engines Misc."

Your connectors for checking are under the rear parcel shelf

on the right side.

It is probably the EGR solenoid

But could be related to the starting issue.

Hope that helps

OK i did the whole ecu code thing this morning and ive got a 12 (starter off) which was probably a good thing and a 33 which appears to be coolant sensor.

Whats this coolant sensor sense? how much there is or how hot it is?

The dasboard temp gauge appears to work very nicely starting off on the little C then making its way to the half mark (just as a temp sensor should). So whats going on here? do i need to be afraid? or be very afraid?

Or do i just get out the black tape and make the ECS light someone elses problem? :-\

Sir KELTIK

The thermo sensor could be the starting problem.

The FI system needs to know what the coolant temp is so it knows how to alter the air fuel ratio.

The thermo sensor is not the thermometer that sends the signal to the dash gage.

It is a separate sensor just for the fuel injection system.

They have a habit of getting corroded terminals,

a cleaning can solve the CEL problem sometimes.

This sensor is a pretty tuff nut to crack as it is

buried behind the intake manifold and down almost on the block.

Slightly left of center as you face the engine.

Here is a shot of it on a semi stripped manifold

(note the green colored corrosion)

Well the nut is a nice shade of oxidised green and im gonna take a break on removing it for the minit. Ive burned my hand on the turbo enough times to learn my lesson and wait for it to cool off.

If indeed it is a faulty sensor how much would you charge to stick it in a box to new zealand because im having severe problems finding parts over here.

The general parts store/wreckers yard conversation goes;

"yup im looking for a whatever for a 86' xt turbo"

"a forrester xt?"

"no the old weird looking ones"

"holy s*** you have one of those? i didnt know there were any around these days!"

and asking for a part for a ea82t doesnt go any better.

OK cheers mate - we may be needing some new rear struts/shocks for the vortex.....the ones on there make driving above 100 very intense and bouncy.

If youve got some nice ones that will fit drop me a pm! :)

Right, back to polishing up those mags.
