ea82 and ea81 drive shafts - are they the same

Recommended Posts

Seems I said rear and front I thought it may be obvius what I was on about, but anyhow. Ok, so there wider. But I guess the gearboxes (4MT DR - 5MT DR) are the same 'wideness'? My bro wants to put a 5spd into his wagon, and I also might be getting a heap of spare parts off a 88 wagon. And seems I have a Brat, and my bro has a 83 wagon I was just figuring out what would be useful.

Phiz- Im in the midddle of doing that, swap trans/motor from wagon- 5s d/r, and 4s d/r into brat. So if the shafts can be changed from ea82 to ea81, but still be hooked up to the 5s d/r, say in the brat! Driveline might be a factor here. either way the driveline is going to be shortened- for the hatch or brat. anyone else have some input on this, maybe done it already! Thanks guys,

the axles are longer, the cups are a different spline count
no - spline count is 23 for EA81 and EA82 (except for turbo MT and 4EAT) - that is the only difference - I think there is a writeup in the USRM about this conversion - trannies are the same width, spline count, etc.

the propellor shafts are different too, the EA81 4MT has a single-piece shorter one, the EA82 is a longer driveshaft, and it has a carrier bearing - it is possible to shim the 4MT driveshaft, but it is not the prefered method

if you put a 5spd tranny in the brat the front axles will fit the same. the tranny crossemberbetween ea81 ans ea82 are different, but you can swap over the existing tranny crossmember to the 5spd tranny

the rear diff ratio will match. but, ,however, you will need the 2 pc driveshaft from an ea82 since the length of the tranny is different. you will have to m ake a mount for the center carrier bearing

you m ight have to stack som e washers, a lug nut, or som e sort of spacer on the fork end of the clutch cable
