Needed: Tried&True performance tips for EA82T

Recommended Posts

So I bit the bullet and ordered a JDM replacement engine for my long-suffering '90 Loyale. For $735 with shipping, it's a good deal for me, and I'll be back on the road as soon as I get it installed.

Of course, now I'll have another engine sitting around: a perfectly rebuildable (blown head gasket, high miles) EA82T in addition to the '87 EA82NA already sitting in the garage.

SO what is the possibility of making like 150 hp or more with this combo? I seem to remember a while ago it was found that the NA block and pistons with the turbo heads and mechanicals seemed to be a streetable combo, but golly if I can find it now. I guess an intercooler couldn't hurt, given that they're so available and so cheap and I can always throw the spare in the back. How about blow-off valves and wastegate springs? Exhaust issues/concerns? Any thoughts there?

It seems a lot of work to do just to get power up around where the EJ series of engines already are, and the EJ swap is well-documented and easily done. But I've already got these two engines, you see; maybe I just don't like seeing things go to waste.

Any advice given will be most gratefully recieved.

Wow... is the link for the search feature broken? This seems like one of the most popular topics today on this board.

Lets start from scratch eh'....

#1 mod, prolly the 1st thing you should do... intercool it! Saab 900 Intercoolers work great as the inlet and outlet are the same diameter as the EA82T Throttle Body. WRX TMIC's work too, more fabrication is involved. Other than that... ANY intercooler can be made to work, they all do the same thing.

#2... BOV. Dont use one. Use a BPV (byPASS Valve) which directs the blown off air back into your intake, post MAF/pre turbo. A BOV will confuse your MAF and the ECU and you'll have a rich condition after every shift.

#3... more boost. Check ebay for Manual Boost Controllers. You can search google and make one... but I spent $50 on a GFB MBC and it works 100x better than the homeade jobbie i got.

#4... Pistons, high compression block. Its been done before. Im in the process of doing it. there's plenty of info on this board from others who have done it as well. Search topics by Calebz, WJM, JWX. Those are a few people that have run high-comp blocks on their EA82T.

150hp can prolly be had if you intercooled and boosted your EA82T.
