J A Blazer
Am considering a 2000 Outback wagon. Is this a Gen 1 or Gen 2 motor? 93K miles; what should I look for?
cookie
Check the stick above to see if it helps but I am fairly sure Outbacks got the phase 2 in 2000. Check to see if the headgasket treatment has been added or gaskets changed. Other than that look for all the standard stuff you would check on a used car. A 2000 should be ready for major service by now and if it has not been done plan to spend quite a few dollars and time on the car.
DerFahrer
Yes, the 99-up cars have the Phase II SOHC EJ25.
OB99W
Yes, the 99-up cars have the Phase II SOHC EJ25.Are you sure? The MY99 OB I own (bought new at the end of 1998) is definitely DOHC, although I don't know offhand which block it has; I've heard that some built in that time period are "hybrids". Does anyone know precisely how to "read" the cast-in "ridges" that supposedly allow you to identify these engines?
DerFahrer
The rule is that 99-up are Phase II SOHC's, but Subaru always makes redheaded stepchildren... Like Josh's (Legacy777's) wagon that he used to build his Legacy: it had ABS and it was a 5-spd. 90 Legacies didn't have ABS if they were 5-spd. Stuff like that... NOMAD327
In america at least, the imprezzas and foresters got the SOHC heads in 99 and the legacy models got the SOHC heads in 2000. The engine blocks also got an upgrade, and that appears to be in 99 for all models regardless of head design
