slidewaysuby Posted February 27, 2006 Share Posted February 27, 2006 im trying to help my buddy fix his 88 gl spfi. heres the problem, it will start after its been sitting for a few hrs and run perfect for about 5 mins, then it dies and has no spark. i checked the rotor and it is turning, the coil is getting power. has 2 cel 34,35 but its had those for years. has a new battery and we got the alt tested(the guy said it kinda bounced around but should be ok) anyone have any ideas? thanks, Dylan Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't know the situation on subes, but on my Jeep, when it was dying, it would work intermittently. You culd start it by tapping on the bottom of the gas tank while someone cranked the key over. Loyale 2.7 Turbo Posted February 27, 2006 Share Posted February 27, 2006 I had the same problem long time ago... in a Datsun Pick ´up 1976 L-16. It was the Main energy cable, the One that goes from the Coil to the Rotor... it Was "Internally" broken... so when it gets hot -just a li´l bit is enough- the cable does not have good contact, and does not transmit the power at all. Try with another one... Maybe it works with your car... Also, you may try to change your fuel filter, maybe is clogged; and check the fuel pump as "Jack in Norfolk" said... If you have tried all of this and had no results, maybe is the Main Magnetron, the one that gives the sparks; inside the Rotor. Good Luck! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Subarian Posted February 27, 2006 Share Posted February 27, 2006 Do this check. When the engine dies, short to the negative (-) terminal on the coil (with the key still in the run position). Pull the jumper away from the terminal, and you should generate a spark. If not, the coil is most likely bad. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
