falkhen
i have 89 XT i bought the car not to long ago for $80 it had blown driver side timing belt so i replaced them. here is the problem my experince with EA series engine is next to none. i know how to do timing belts on them becuase i have done customer cars. now the problem comes with this. I have this intermitant problem. were car surges allot. Its almost like its missing, this happens when im not accellerating or when the throttle pedal is not being progressivly being pushed down. engine light will flash then when i pull over to connect the green plugs to get code its gone so i only get 5.5.5.5.5 so forth... i look up and the engine code cleared while idling, i also tried shutting off the engine when code was present no dice its only temperary.. this is mostly a drivability issue and its geting real annoying falkhen
Skip
try the other connectors (black in color) the green ones are for setting the timing I did an advanced "search" for "surging" in the old gen section here is one good one, there are plenty more. I have also read where a low alternator output will cause this. surging problem here is a link to the ECU in the board's repair manual ECU Codes
kayakertom
I've also had that problem in my '89 XT. My diagnosis was a clogging injector and now I add injector cleaner to my fuel tank about every time I do an oil change.
