my fan makes noise

Featured Replies

Hi, this is my first post so please don't laugh because I don't know anything about cars. My fan for the heater and defroster is making a clicking noise. Does anyone know why it is doing this? Is it expensive to fix? HELP!

Defroster turns on the A/C to dry the air.

Is the clicking happening once every few minutes? That could be normal, the A/C relay could be clicking.

Try manually switching off the A/C in defrost mode (windscreen Symbol), the clicking might go away :)

the noise sounds like remember how children put playing cards in the spokes of their bicycles. It sounds like that. It gets louder when i turn up the fan, and quieter when I turn it down. Thank you for helping me, sorry about being the dumb blonde. :)

Sounds like maybe something like a leaf or gum wrapper has found it's way into the fan area. I had a similar problem and ran the fan on high speed for a while and it finally cleared itself out.

1. It could be something in the fan. Running it at high speed might clear it out.

2. The fan could have a cracked squirrel cage or have lost a balance weight. In either of those cases, it would need to be replaced.

Okay, new tack!

Get under the passenger side of the dash, the fan housing is the round bit secured with three or four screws. Undo these, lower the fan and clean out any debris. Check the fan for broken blades, too. Re-install, and you should be good to go :D

(All the Subes I have driven have a very slight background clicking, especially in fan speed 2. Road noise drowns it out though.)

Thanks you guys, now if I can get my boyfriend to fix it, all will be well. Thanks again, bye for now.

now if I can get my boyfriend to fix it,

Of course you can, WRXgirl. We have great faith in you!

C'mon, do it yourself. It's not that hard, and what a feeling of accomplishment you'll have.
