Getting a Legacy, I'm new and have some questions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am about to buy a 1995 Subaru Legacy LS 2.2L AWD n/a this week. It has only 56K miles and its in great shape. It has a small crack in the front and a little bit of rust on the trunk. I have some questions that hopefully you guys can help with.

What spark plug/wires do you recommend? I'm thinking Bosch platinum +4 and wires. My thunderbird runs like crap with them, but its a picky motor. And how about Mobil 1 synthetic for oil?

As far as mods I'm gonna put in a K&N drop in filter, a tornado, and a crank underdrive pulley. I want to extract about 10-15hp and get a little better gas mileage. Do these sound good? I'm not trying to break the bank.

Finally, is there anything I need to know about this car or is recommended to replace?

Thanks a lot guys, hopefully I'll be around a little more.

I'd go with NGK plugs. Subaru motors seem to like them.

I'd do some research on the tornado before you spend money on it. Popular Mechanics did a dyno test on it and other fuel-saving devices and there was 0 fuel savings.

Mobil1 is great.

The 95 EJ22 was still a non-interference motor, so it's a good choice. I have 165,000 on my 94.

not sure if your talking about the tornado thing that goes with the air intake system but sorry to let you know but it doesn't really do what you think and doesn't give you better gas mileage at least not since last i heard about them.

I'll also add my .02 on the K&N air filter. The only benefit to this filter is that you never have to replace it. It does NOT filter or flow any better than a standard paper filter. Also, you run the risk of atomized oil droplets contaminating the MAF sensor.

Talking oil here is like talking religon and politics, beware. Do a search on air filters, basically the OE filter is about as good as it gets.

The tornado thing is a complete waste of money, as is all those gas milage increase cons.

SUbaru engines are fairly well desighned, breath well, and have about all your going to get out of the engine. There really isnt anything you can do to get more power out of the car that subaru hasnt already done.

As much as we would all like more power, we buy these things for thier go anywhere capability. If you want more power, should have got a turbo.
