bakerman1
John did the swap for me, and I have a question for others who have done the swap. 1. Do others have the same lag time that I do when I turn the key off and it takes 2 seconds for the engine to respond? 2. in the mornings I have been having a problem with it starting. It will hesitate and try to fire, and just sputter for a few seconds and then it will catch and idle up. Only happens in the morning after it has been sitting for 8 hours or so. and finally... 3. I just checked my fuel economy and I have been getting around 22-23 mpg around town driving........is that what you guys have been getting? Thanks in advance for your responses......cant wait till WCSS8 Ken

Frank B
I haven't done the swap nor driven an EJ22 car(parted one out once) but it seems as if there was a problem with the set up before you swapped it out. Did you operate the engine in the donor car? Maybe re-check all the connections.
NoahDL88
My 1980 conversion, done by Austin and Mudrat did the runon, but the one i did, didn't do it, and i wired it differently according to the Kennedy engineering diagram, so that may make a difference. bakerman1
so how can I fix that, and what kind of mileage are you getting? Ken
suberdave
how do you have your fan connected? is it set to run whenever the engine is running? just connected to key on power and grounded at the fan? if so you need to put a diode in your power line, what happendes is when you shut the key off, the fan stoppes being a fan and turnes into a generator. when the fan stops turnning then the engine will stop running. just an idea, had this happen on one of my GL's and seen it many times on cars at work. as far as fuel milage. that could depend on many things. tire pressure dirty air cleaner, dirty injectors, need a tune up? i did a EJ20T in my GL-10 and it gets just over 20MPG i think thats awesome. but i guess i shouldnt even compair it to a EJ22... -=Suberdave=-
bakerman1
Superdave, your a genius! Thats exactly why it didnt shut off. I unplugged the fan and bam, it shut off imediatly. So what kind of diode do i get and from where? Thanks for your help. Ken
ballitch
or you could leave the fan wiring alone and have it come on when the temp. requires it to cool the coolant down. but what suberdave said sounds logical to me, ever play with little DC motors hooked in parallel? i was getting about 24-26 mpg with mixed city/highway driving, but i think my o2 sensor is crap, i got it from the JY when i did the swap. and new ones are like $75. try IAC valve, plugs, plug wires, maf sensor, o2 sensor, ignitor, stuff like that. just your basic tune-up. and of course MPG is directly proportional to how much work your right foot does...... ~Josh~
Snowman
For fuel economy, I've been getting 20 around town and mid twenties on the highway. Now, this is in the winter (makes a big difference), with old spark plugs, oxygen sensor, etc. I'm doing a full tune up soon and I'll report back on my mileage. bakerman1
Thanks for all the info, and the "delayed Engine" fix. I had subaru try to find the problem and they couldnt figure it out and it cost me $125. I post on here and its solved by you guys and it cost nothing. I love this message board, and SuberDave, if you are at WCSS8, I want to shake your hand. Thanks Ken Keep the mileage reports coming. I have tuned up my car and have a new O2 sensor in there. I figure I'm getting around 22mpg.
