archemitis
im puting late 80s mpfi into my ea81 car, and i need a hand with wiring. i have asked for advice here, and got no responses. i know there are people runing around with them in everything from vws to porches. but i cant find anyone who has written up a step by step, or even a paragraph about how to make the mpfi work. stuff like, should i leave it all in one huge piece, and just plug in motor stuff, and give it power? should i chop it up and make an entirely new one? if the engine speed sensor isnt hooked up, will performance be lost? i have layed it out next to a diagram, and have someideas, but ineed some direction. is ther another message board i should be directing these questions to, or what? maybe an aircraft or buggy page? any suggestions will help. Adam N.D.J.
I'm thinking that you have an entire car harness your working with here. What you should do is find your computer connectors, and then follow them and trim them out from the rest of the harness, this will make things easier. You will need to modify the EA82 dizzy to work in the EA81, I'm thinking there is a page on the USRM that tells how to do this. This is integral as the computer uses the signal from the dizzy to fire off the coil and time the injectors. Then you will need to swap all the sensors into the EA81 block. There won't be the orifice for the knock sensor to plug into though, unless you get an EA81T block. Just follow the diagram and keep to it. You will need to make sure that all the powers and ground are perfect, just one ground that isn't connected will make everything not work, this is what happened to me. As for connecting the power, get a fuse bar, then from your ignition switch run a switch hot to a relay to feed the fuse bar, run 10A fuses for the system, you should have at least 3 fuses, as the injector harness has their own power supply, as well as the computer and some of the sensors, you will find at least 3 power wires when you run through the scematic, there are more, but some of them are run together. Each ground should be run individually, you can drill some small holes in the fire wall, and connect up the ground with self tapping screws. This is important though, cause a loose ground can pop a computer. Also, don't forget the ignition amplifier, it is on the coil bracket, this is important to the coil fireing, there is a condensor in the IA circuit, this is pretty important too, make sure it's in there, it doesn't look like a regular old condensor though, it's a grey or black box that is connected to a 2 wire plug, the box looks like it's just a plug cap though. Lotsa luck to ya. If you have any problems, lemme know.
