Topic has been recently covered extensively

EDIT:

any adapter plates that i could use? To use a standard rim...?

No.. and theres no such thing as a 'Standard Rim'.. there are some that are just a lot more easily available than 4x140

I don't mind filling in newbies:drunk: (and yes, I have been drinking osifer!)

1) There is the XT6 swap (lower controll arms, struts, spindels, rotors hubs, and tie rods) this will give U a more comon 5 lug patern

2) Re-drill your hubs and drums( if so equipt) for the 6 lug patern-or-re drill 6 lug rims to fit the 4 lug soob.

3) Aluminium wheel adaptors=$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ U can get them, but they are around $80 EACH!!!!!! (more than I would spend on the wheels)

4) Pug rims(Peugot, or how ever the hell it's spelled) are a bolt on, and can be had in 14" and 15", alloy or steel. But! be sure to get LUG NUTS with them if U get the alloys. I prefer the 14" alloys my self, I think they look the best!

On the re-drilling: Chevy rims have a smaller center hole than Toyota or Nissan rims, so they will take more work to fit, and the off set is all wrong. Toyota rims seem to be the generall consensis for the best fit( but I have not done it my self YET)

Hope all this helps awnser your questions:wave:

Yes - please use the search engine - we have covered this in detail many, many times.

And for further questions regarding your hatch - please note that anytime you about for aftermarket parts and performace stuff, the answer will basically be no. If you want to do anything to that car, you will have to do it yourself, as there's nothing availible to you. The exception to this is lift kits - there is someone that makes lift kits for yours (if you convert to 4WD), and there's also a few guys who will do custom fabbing for bumpers, roof racks, ect.

I didn't gather that you wanted to off-road it heavily tho. For rally, it's fine the way it is really - just put in the EA81 engine, and the 4WD, and you can have a lot of fun with it.

Greetings new guy, don't let these old crones get to you. :P

McBrat has a wheels page set up somewhere if you do a little looking. Some where in the usmb.net. . . :)

If you're thinking about a lift, the man who makes the US version of the BYB kits is righ up the street from you in SD.

instead of harpin on the guys who have never been here before, we can have a FAQ link that has all the threads that are commonly asked...So when a new user signs up, they can see in big bold letters "Frequently Asked Questions" or "Look here before you Post.."

just a thought

The FAQ idea has been fielded before and is a darn good one. Actually, there are a lot of wheels that will fit, but as stated Pugeot is the only other car manufacture that ever used the bastard pattern. I keep seeing different wheels and just got a set I had never seen before off of a '79 df coupe. The wheel page has several, and Ken found some really nice Einkes for his son's car. The real hard part is finding any for sale. Pug's are getting harder and harder to find, it isn't like they imported a bunch of them anyway. There is another thing about Pugs, there is one, metric tire only wheel. The tires are available, but way high dollar. If the rims have tires, check the size before paying the cash. They are pretty rare though. Check the market place, they come up but you have to be quick. Then there is the shipping. Another thing to consider is that putting 14 or 15 inch wheels on an underpowered car will not improve performance, quite the opposite. Moderators, about that FAQ idea, anyone? Maybe an archive that doesn't drop off after 500 entrys like the last one and someone to decide which topics were saved. I personally don't know if this format will do that, just a suggestion.:burnout:

The FAQ is a good idea, problem... who's going to write it?

Here's mick's wheel page:

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/wheels2/wheels.html

If you want to have wheels made, our bolt pattern is 4x140mm. Your best bet is Peugeot rims, and lucky for us, Peugeot's are plentiful in California. Keep an eye in the JunkYard.

this may not be tires but for the performance side of life there is upgrades. and performance parts. granted they cost money like everything. paeco makes subaru performance engines and parts, along with some aircraft engine builders make some. there are also other sources for subaru performance, you just have to dig. don't let anyone tell you it's not out there.

weber makes a carb kit to fit our cars too. weber 32/36, then attach an empi or a k & n filter. personally i use the empi on the weber, and it works awesome. there's a performance engine builder somewhere in eugene, or. that mudrat can get engines from. it all costs money. don't let people say it's not there, those are the people (no offense but,..) the reason why we can't get a lot of after market stuff. not enough people to pull together to order bulk parts so stuff becomes available for our cars.

You guys are right - there is stuff like performance engine parts availible, but when you can get an EJ22 and tranny including the car it came in (wrecked) for $700 (The price of a single aircraft head), the aircraft parts don't seem quite as good of a deal anymore. Also - with the aircraft stuff, your going to get more HP and torque, but the rest of the drivetrain will not be upgraded to match it. The EA81 tranny's wouldn't handle that kindof power I would wager. The first 5k RPM clutch dump with a 200 HP EA81 might just be the last.

I have yet to see a single car with these "aircraft" mods in it. I'm all for performance, and the aircraft guys use these because (for them) they are a cheap alternative to real aircraft engines. Even at $10,000, a built EA81 is still cheaper than good airplane engines. And they don't use our transmissions, so they haven't designed any mods for the transmissions to keep up with the HP of the engine.

I'm not saying the suff isn't cool, and all, just that it's not designed for cars, and isn't priced where car people can afford it. We shouldn't need it anyway, as there are plenty of more powerful subaru engines to be had if we want performance. Think of the potential of the EJ22? There's tons of aftermarket stuff for that engine that was designed for cars.

I for one like that FAQ idea, but unfortunately, I don't think it would help (much) with the newbie question problem. If they can't use a search engine, then they won't use a FAQ either. How about a list (in BIG BOLD letters) of links to searches for stuff like wheels, EA81 performance, EA82 performance, etc. The link would take them right to the search results for that topic...... easier to write than a full FAQ, and will also teach them the value of a well worded search.

Ease up people!

The thing we have forgotten is that we were ALL new once too. As I recall most people have asked these questions at least once. On EZBoard these same questions were asked at least twice a week.

A FAQ is a good idea but the upkeep is alot of work. The search function could be made to stand out a little more. It sort of blends in. We are experiencing growing pains again like we did in the past. We just need to keep it in perspective. I know alot of you and no offence but it would get boring talking about the same old stuff or not having new topics coming up that the new people can bring.

A few people have kept a file with the standard answers to the standard questions on hand for this exact reason. All you have to do is cut and paste and everyone is the better for it. Folks can ease the conjestion a little by looking around for answers to their questions or seeing if the topic is already being covered in the first couple of pages. I have seen alot of mirror topics on the same page.

So, in closing remember this. I can go back and find when everyone was new and tell you which of the FAQ you asked to start your posting history with.

Let's just welcome the new members and enjoy the ride.

And for the record. There are a few manufacturers that bulit wheels and even other aftermarket parts for our era of vehicles. SenDel(wheels), Kamei(air dams), Enke(wheels), Weber(carbs), Bushman(brushguards), Jackman(offroad accys) there are even wheels available through some of the tire distributors like Les Schwab. They are not readily available these days but you can find them occasionally.

Be ready to buy if you find them as every member is also on the look out for them. Watch the market place for stuff all the time. Wheels are the most plentiful thing on the board these days. Granted, most are stock replacements but a different look all the same.

So true Qman - I was saying that there wasn't anything out there for wheels, body kits, etc as far as *new* stuff goes. You are right that there is still the occasional vintage peice that shows up for our cars, and there's a few guys on the board (like yourself) that generally find that stuff. It's not luck, it's the willingness to be out there trolling for it every day. To look at the auctions on ebay and to bid when you find something.

I still say a BOLD list of links that take you directly to pre-formed searches woud be easy to make, and really helpfull for people that are new to the site - a big banner that says "WHEELS AND TIRES" that took them to a search of the forum containing information about those topics.

Emphasis on the search function, and maybe a BIG banner saying "please search for the answer to your question before posting" would be nice. If would alleviate us having to rehash the same thing over and over. Also - the more we do that, the more difficult it will be to actually do searches. As the database gets larger, search times will increase, and the amount of results you get back will be HUGE. It will be harder to find all the information because narrowing the search will be very difficult, and the number of threads you get back with a search like "wheels" will be many many pages long. This problem will only be excerbated by the lack of good searching skills that many people have, as they will be unable to narrow their search criteria with the proper search string formatting. Maybe we could use a FAQ on that as well.....

The USRM will have this information soon. I was in the process of building a FAQ and pre-search page (do a search for information, link that search page, and put the link on a webpage for easy access) and link it to the message board, but my admin rights were pulled before it was completed.

The search engine should be easier to find. Hell, i dont even know where to find it 1/2 the time. Its not hard to do, just time consuming, and most of the people with the power have too much to do as it is.

i do remember when i first came here. qman you don't have to go back and find all the questions i have asked. because i'd be here for months on end. that's the major point i was trying to say, options need to be left open. if i find some post of a question i know the answer i answer it. because that was the treatment i was given. i had a door of info opened to me. i know i've annoyed people by asking q's over and over. but i was never turned down. if someone knew about it i would be told, or given directions to where i could try to find my answer. never was i given the treatment of it's not there. like right now i'm looking for the rummered 5.13:1 gearsets for our rearends. i'd like to put those in eventually after i get the divorced t-case. if i was told it's not there i wouldn't be here. with out the hp, the kindness of the hp i wouldn't be here today, ken and eric especially have helped me a lot with my progression to be where i am, i'm still very green behind the ears but absorbing all i can.

I think I said that. The FAQ idea was only a suggestion. As stated, I don't even know if this format will support it. I don't mind answering the same question more than once, because usually I have learned something since the last time. The point about everyone being new at one time or the other is well taken. The repair information seems to hardly ever be accessed. Search by topic, highlighted, may be the way to go. All words, any words, complete phrases, it depends on the system. Maybe at the top of each forum page. No one seems to spend much time on the front page. Just another suggestion, does not express dissatisfaction
