quick ea81toea82 swap question

Exactly.

 

Get the 8 7/8 inch clutch disk for the EA81 21 spline. This will go between the EA82 flywheel and pressure plate. Watch out on the throw out bearing size. My bearing on the EA81 tranny could pass through the finger hole on the EA82 flywheel. I had to muck around autozone for a throw out bearing with a bigger surface area and the center size that would fit over the EA81 tranny. Just do a quick sanity check of the throw out bearing and pressure plate. :banana:

From what I understand, the spline count of the input shaft is different between the EA-81 and EA-82 trannys along with the collar that the throw-out bearing rides on. Plus the throw-out bearing not fitting the fingers of the pressure plate, like Scott mentioned. Add to that, the pilot bearing size difference.

Really thinking that's why the guy that swapped the EA-82 engine into the '82 BRAT I now own, used the EA-81 flywheel, and clutch assembly. He re-drilled the mounting bolt holes to fit the larger ones for the EA-82 engine crankshaft.

Main problem with doing that is, you lose the marks for timing the T-belts. Plus, the ignition timing marks are off a bit, I'm setting ignition timing by ear right now.

If you have both flywheels available, you could enlarge the bolt holes in the EA-81s, stack them atop each other, both facing the same way. Align the bolt holes to their proper postion. Then make your own marks on the EA-81 flywheel, for T-belt and ignition.

You could send me that un-needed EA-82 flywheel so that I can do my 5 speed swap. Yes/No, maybe so?!?! Just asking is all.

WELL, i know for a fact that the 2wd ea82 clutch disc will not fit on the splines of a 4wd ea82 tranny.

 

so are there three different tranny splines, or two? im sure i'll find out tomorrow, when i get the ea81 engine out of the car. i am just wondering if i should go pull a two wheel drive engine just for a flywheel i may or may not use.

There are two spline types and two clutch sizes to contend with in this swap (discussing only 4WD components).

 

The two splines are 21 and 24 being EA81 and EA82 respectively.

 

The two clutch sizes are 7 7/8 and 8 7/8 and they are spread all over the place.

 

My combo is as follows:

 

ER27 engine (exact same as a EA82 as far as splines and mating etc.

 

EA81 4 spd tranny which has a 21 spline input shaft

 

EA82 flywheel and pressure plate which have a 8 7/8 design

 

EA81 clutch disk with a 21 spline hub

 

Throw out bearing with EA81 sleeve size and EA82 outer size

I recently had a 1981 gl-f ea81 2wd and decided to go with the ea82 motor. I had to drill the flywheel bolt holes on the ea81 flywheel to use the ea82 flywheel bolts.(they are bigger) the flywheel kept the 2wd's clutch and pressure plate.

other than the flywheel it basicaly fell into the car with NO MODS. I left the disty out to get the motor around the brake mastercylinder. Pretty much the same setup as tom's brat.

do you still have the '82 tranny in yours? there are 2 different ea81 D/R trannies. the 81-82 had the 7 7/8 clutch, smaller flywheel, and smaller throwout bearing. when my tranny went out on my 82 wagon, I put in an '83 tranny. starting in '83, the throwout bearing has a bigger diameter, and a bigger clutch 8 7/8, and a bigger holder.... the shaft the holder rides on is larger as well, so an '82 bearing holder won't work on the 83+ tranny...

 

luckily I had a spare '83 flywheel to go with the tranny.
