Gl-boost
On my 87 turbo, the waste gate is wired open. The linkage is there so I decided to wire it up like it should, well when I hooked it up and started it lots of blue smoke was comeing from the exhaust. Wired it back up and its ok, no smoke. Why. Durania
Don't hold me too it but I heard blue smoke is a pretty common thing on turbocharged vehicles.
4x4_Welder
Turbo seals are probably gone, sounds like it's only smoking when the turbo spins. Just for kicks, I checked Advance Auto's website- you can get a turbo, rebuilt by Holly, for the low price of $600. Unbelievable. You can get your rebuilt for around $400, at least that's what the one for my 86 Trooper Diesel cost, it needed the entire center section and both wheels replaced. Skip
I agree it's toast, but these are pretty stout units. Make sure it's getting coolant flow and pick up a used one from the marketplace section of the board. ~ 50- 75 GW's Another possibility is it got coked from not allowing it to cool off after hard running. Gl-boost
Well sadly the car is no worth $600, The frame is starting to go and I only am useing it as a knock around car. I just wanted to now so if I find a used one I will take it. Thanks
Gl-boost
Another question, will the turbo stil work with it wired up like this.
Tcat55371
Well here is my thoughts cause I have been fighting with the same issues on my XT: I bought a used turbo off the internet and yeah it's lots better. Only thing is it's still doing it alittle. I took my old turbo in and had it rebuilt, picked it up last week. 242.78 was the total cost with tax. If your wheels have not touched and scraped anywhere it's rebuildable. The other issue is the oil exit gets carboned up and the oil can not go back to the pan fast enough, this causes it to pass back into the intake side and smokes. Does it mostly on slow speeds correct? It's on vaccum then. Thats what mine is doing. It's hard to clean that carbon build up off thru oil cleaners but you can try that. I ran a couple thru with cheap oil changes and it helped some. Once you have done that the other thing you can go is run a synsetic <sp> oil in it. Will cost you more but it wont show the blue smoke. Will still probably burn it but atleast you will be able to still see the cars behind you. I finally got tired of trying everyones idea's and just bought a JDM motor. I got it this week and I'm putting my rebuilt turbo on it and then swapping it into the car. I had picked up most of the parts to do a TD04 turbo swap but I'm thinking I wont do it. Dont know yet. Hope this helps some, I'm sure other people will have some idea's and these are just mine. Good luck
