Hill Holder Nightmare

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone

I have a 1985 subaru wagon, 5 speed manual transmission. After my 1990 Legacy was stolen, my boyfriend obtained this car from his sister, who had parked it in her driveway 2 years before. So, we had a lot of work done to get it running, new master cylinder, brakes, new gaskets, new tires and on and on. It was running fine for about 2 months. I noticed that the brake was getting a bit sticky.. and then suddenly, the right front brake locked up, on the Freeway. I went through the brake pads and rotors getting it to a mechanic, that was January 7th. It's still there. So far, new master cylinder, new rotors, new pads. The mechanic and his team have worked on it and can not keep the hill holder from locking up. They have bled the lines, replaced so many things that it seems that the money put into this car since Sept (2,500) has rightfully earned it the name "NO LIMIT!". The hill holder will not release once the brakes are tapped. Any hints? any hope?

Hi,

I had same problem. The adjustment was so precise at the fork, even a full turn (just one) gave sticking/no function of hill holder. I finally loosened clutch cable to very loose, this allowed for more adjustment flaws(there is alot of play pushing in clutch before it disengages). Even then, fall to spring did something different to whole setup, and may just say to heck with hillholder anyway. (I "burn rubber" taking off from a hill in spring/summer, works great all winter):-\
