No1Scout
I am a first time poster on this forum and hope someone can help with my question. I have a 2000 Impreza Outback Sport with about 70,000 miles on it. For the past month, there has been a strange burning-type smell coming from the hood after i drive the car and get out. It is not under the hood but just the hood itself where the raised filter-looking thing. The temperature guage is normal. I cannot figure it out. Any ideas? Check engine light goes off and on but has been doing that for months and the mechanic cannot pull up any history when he links it to the machine. Not sure if this is related. Jaysz
Is it a manual transmission, when my clutch was on the go I would get some horrible burning smells at times with my 96 impreza outback.

Fatz
could be a oil leak, cmmin from either cvs, or rocker cover?? or even somewhere else? then that can flick onto the exhaust and burn the oil?Or it could be a coolant leak somewhere.. doing a similar thing? Smpol19
Check the CV joints, when the boots fail the right side one will often splatter grease all over the exhaust and engine compartment which doesn't smell so nice....
unverviking
It is a manual but I just had the clutch replaced. It could just be the new clutch "burning" in... Does it smell like burning brakes ?? That would be the clutch plate burning in, much like brake pads do for the first couple of weeks or so...

There are many things can leak that can cause smoke. Very little oil makes lots of smoke. Popular leak is cam seals and main seal. nipper
Setright
I think yer man means the "hood scoop". Maybe too many dead insects in there?
kevinsUBARU
check the scoop for birds!
No1Scout
Could the smell really be coming from something dead stuck in the hood scoop (did not know that was what it was called)? It literally smells just in that part of the hood. Can that wooly looking material on the underside of the hood be removed to clean it out? There are no leaks, smoke etc. I cannot smell it from inside the car- only when I get out after driving.

No1Scout
Wow! I will have to look for something stuck up in there. I just have to figure out how to get to it from under the hood. There is some protective padding covering the area that does not seem to want to come off.
Wayne Boncyk
Well, in the FWIW department, I had something similar with my '96 OBW when it was relatively new (~20K miles) and we lived in rural South Dakota. Turns out that it was dozens of dead locusts (no, maybe hundreds is more correct) that were all over everything in the engine compartment, and definitely in the air intake. It was a particularly bad year for grasshoppers there in the Summer of '97....
Juan
I would also check/test for Top Raman noodles or, at least, Cup O' Soup stuck somewhere. Juan.
