need a new gas tank

Recommended Posts

I found the other day my gas tank has a leak. closer inspection it has several little pin holes that have rusted through, I tried to use jb weld after properly preppin the surface, and it still leaks like a ***************.

I found several new tank, but they are 250+. Thought I'd consult the forums and see if any one knew of a place with better prices.

Anthony

EDIT: its a 91 loyale 5spd, front wheel drive 1.8L motor

Wow this is crazy I was just going o post the same thread. I have an 87 Gl-10 4WD and I just fixed two gas lines under the rear seat on the drivers side. I was drive ing the car today on a 60 mile round trip and smelt gas when I opend the window or sunroof. I saw no dripping anymore like before.

Well when the car was at my dads garagee I noticed that the tank also leaked. This sucks royaly. It appears to be the seam of the tank right by the filler neck but I think its lust the filler neck hose leak. But there is also two little lines in the side of the gas tank by the filler neck and this is what appears to be leaking which appears to be going over the seam. Are these common leaks. I am worried though that if I mess with it the line will break of. Hopefully its just the clamps and not the metal line that the hose attaches to so can anyone help us. I also don't mean to high jack your thread.

Out here the yards remove the tank and put it in the back seat or trunk so they are availible from the junk yards here.... not sure about where you live. Shipping wouldn't be all that bad, but have to clean it up good and cover sharp edges with cardboard ect - still it certainly wouldn't be $250.

Have you tried any radiator/gas tank shops? They could probably patch it as well. Also try the wanted forum here on our board - perhaps someone is parting a car in your area.

As for this being common - it's a rust-effect from your salt. Out here I've never seen any subaru fuel tank leak no matter how old.

Well I was going o hit the local junk yards tommorow. I am monitoring the leak as of right now and makeing sure it is the lines. the only thing is that when I try o clean up the area I dont want to break them off.

Hey boost, Look into your right rear fenderwell. The coverplate for the fuel filler neck and lines is in there. Pull the plate off, i think it's three bolts that holds it on. The bolts may break even if you spray them down with penetrating oil.

I replaced one filler neck because it had a hole in it where the mounting bracket is located. Taking that plate off will allow you evaluate this area and clean it out. There is usually a lot of crud up in there. Hope this helps.

Ok will do, I already cleaned out as much as possible. Its just hard to find time to do this as I am always on the go. I also checked the seam at the back of the tank. It looks as if its leakeing from here somewhere or just from the side and them spreading. Its hard to tell because the gas spreads everywhere.

There are shops that can take your tank and refurb it - they pour in a lining to seal it up. If it's not too bad it may be cheaper and easier to go that route. Otherwise there are plenty of people with old ru's out here that have no rust. Tanks out here are as good as new for the most part.
