Kha0S
'ello, folks... I'm about to be the proud owner of an EF12 Justy (4WD 5MT). I was pondering the feasibility of shoehorning the EA82T motor and 4WD MT drivetrain into the Justy shell. I'm a relative newbie to older-generation Subarus (though, my first car was an '89 GL turbo wagon 4WD AT, didn't know what I had)... but I've transplanted a Legacy Turbo 5MT gearbox into my WRX for daily driver duties, so I'm no stranger to a wrench. Discuss. /Andrew
bushbasher
Alot of work but probably worth it in the end. There is another who has successfully put an ea82 in a justy. You'll probably have to make a completely custom engine bay and subframe, the axles will need adapting, probably more. But imagine this: 5spd dual range 4wd in a justy with 100hp! Anybody know what the justy axles/rear diff/hubs can stand?
Kha0S
When you say "custom engine bay," that implies that the engine bay would be large enough to fit the motor, but that everything in there would need to be changed around quite a bit... is this accurate? I'd be prepared for custom subframe work anyway... meheh. 134 ft-lb of torque in a Justy is an addictive proposition. Any URLs for the EA82 conversion that you mention? Thanks! /Andrew
RallyKeith
Justy motor is an inline 3, just like any FWD honda or toyota. This is different from every other subaru that you would be used to. There is no way to install an EA-82 with out SERIOUS work. Even installing a larger motor from something Like a honda won't work. I owned a Justy and a I own a 1.6l Honda del Sol and an 89 RX. I actually parked them all side by side once and looked, for just this reason. bushbasher, you serious? I'd love to see it if it were done. The Justy is actually a pretty quick car to start. It doesn't take a big motor to move a small car. Keith
bushbasher
I remember that there was/is such a car, no pics though. Also a justy with hp in the high 100's from the 1.2l, but apparently it required some serious work. by custom engine bay I mean that basically all the surrounding sheetmetal is useless, it is meant to fit around a transverse motor. You'd also have to find a new home for the rad. Basically you'd be doing a whole custom front end out of tubing, and mounting the body panels like a skin onto the tubes. It might be better to put the ea81 in there, it is not as wide, and no computer issues. Plane the heads and put 1600 pistons in, then put a weber and an exhaust on. I would want a full-time 4wd box cause wheelspin would be crazy in 2wd, and because there would be less stress on each axle.
GeneralDisorder
Subaru got 125 HP from the Justy engine (and they destroked it to 1.0L) - why not just stick with that. Putting an EA82 in there would be nearly impossible due to the size of the car. Also - as mentioned, the justy is transverse, and it's transmission layout is completely different than any other soob, so MASSIVE custom work would be needed. I say just work with the 3 cylinder. Kha0S
Note, I'm discussing transplanting the entire drivetrain into the Justy, not just the motor, so transverse vs. longitudinal mount is of no consequence. The plan would, essentially, consist of gutting the entire engine bay, and using a Sawzall and plasma cutter to remove any and all crossmembers and bracing that isn't essential to chassis integrity and blocks installation of the EA82. Custom tubular crossmembers would be fabricated to hold the motor and drivetrain into the vehicle. Axles would be modified and rebalanced to attach to the new gearbox and rear end. Driveshaft to rear end would be shortened and balanced for the chassis. Holes would be cut in appropriate places to run clutch, shifter, and electrical components, as necessary. Radiator would likely be relocated. My primary question is, is there enough space between the sides of the engine bay to wedge the EA82 in without cutting support out of the unibody? /Andrew
Hondasucks
I read somewhere that the turbo stuff off of a Turbo Sprint will bolt onto a Justy.
GeneralDisorder
Use an EA81 - it's much narrower. Or you could use an EJ22 - also much narrower than the EA82. You picked basically the biggest engine. Anything else would be smaller. GD

I would love to put an EJ22 into the car... but was under the impression that it was very wide, ala the EJ18 and EJ25. Do you know of a reference with the various EA/EJ series motors and their rough dimensions? Thanks, /Andrew
GeneralDisorder
Wish I did know a reference. The EJ22 will fit into even a Gen 1 Brat, so it is (I think) the narrowest of the OHC models. The EA82 is very wide, and *will* fit in a Gen 2 car or Brat, but with only like 1/2" on either side. I've seen a pic of an EJ22 in a car, and you might ask Mudrat79 what the dimensions are, as he has one in his an EJ22 in his lifted hatch. GeneralDisorder
woudn't you need to lift the car to fit the tranny under the floorpan? Or heavily modify the floopan since it was desgined to accomidate a driveline, but not a whole tranny..... Just a thought. GD

Yeah, I expect some modification of the floorpan area to clear a longitudinal transmission case. Wee... bust out the welder and the plasma torch... /Andrew
bushbasher
You might have to put a different rear diff in, as I don't know if the justy has the same final drive ratio (3.70 or 3.90 are the ones found in ea series cars.
RallyKeith
You know, it might just be easier to buy a pre-built ea-82 powered dune buggy and throw a justy shell over top of it! Now that would be funny! Keith
