Experts needed! 3-pin TPS retrofitted onto 4-pin TPS?

Recommended Posts

So discussing this matter with kingbobdole, having my own FSM for a spyder intake, and a cut apart 3-pin harness, I'm still having issues on figuring this all out. Now the 3-pin harness only has 2 wires going into the TPS, whereas according to my FSM for the spyder intake, there's 4 wires going into the TPS. I have specs for the spyder TPS as far as voltages and whatnot, but she still has this hesitation I mentioned in another post. So, experts, how do I retrofit a 3-pin TPS onto my spyder intake? I can cut apart my 4-pin harness on the spyder if need be, thats not a problem but having a basic wiring diagram would help greatly! If its a matter of cutting and splicing a couple wires together and mounting the TPS, I can do that but without the FSM for the 3-pin TPS, I'm totally lost. Also, on the 4-pin harness, it shows the wires going into different spots on the ECM, or is it because the ECM from an XT is totally different from a regular EA82 MPFI ECM? Thanks for all the help since I gotta get my RX on the road ASAP!

If you actually look at the 2 TPS's, you'll find they move oppositie directions... thus, not interchangeable without a good amount of modification.

85-86 TPS's are different from 87+ TPS's which are different than spider manifold TPS's.

I used the spider TPS. Do I have issues? probally, but that is not the cause of the hesitation.

Try more timing. Hesitation will go away, then your head gaskets will go BOOM! I always thought my hesitation was cams and/or turbo.

We shall see with this new motor. No delta cams, and VF11 FTW.

so I'm guessing you used the TPS for the spyder intake cause I believe you used a NA intake like I did. From what you're saying is just to leave it as is and it should be fine? Just mess with the timing and get her goin huh? I'll just have to do that...

Also, since you decided to respond to this post as well, how did you make the AAV fit? Mine is hitting the outlet on my TD04. If anything, I can put it on the firewall and run a couple new lines to it with the wiring as well...

For awhile I ran without it. But, while trying to fix idle and hesitation issues I put it back in.

I put it at the stock spot on the manifold, however, just move it towards the center of the manifold, and only use one of the bolts to hold it in.

thats what I have been thinking I was going to have to do. Good thing I got tons of spare intake gaskets. Thanks Tex!

  • 4 months later...

sorry to drag up an old thread, but did anyone ever figure out how to wire up the 4 wire to the 3 wire harness?

i think i read somewhee that three of the wires were the same function as the three wire and the fourth was something about idle enrichment or something to that effect that the xt needed.

ive got the spyder manifold with the xt6 throttle body on it it the machine shop and i should be getting it back on monday.

well mine seemed to work out pretty decent. I dunno about Tex but the only issue I had was the fact that my car would have a weird idle. Sometimes it would idle, sometimes it wouldn't but I think that had to do with other tuning issues.

sooo, how did you wire it up? also, how did you get the throttle cable linked up?

Well what I did was what Tex did on the TB. I rotated it 90 degrees so the throttle linkage was sticking straight up, used my stock throttle cable and modified it to work. For the TPS, I had to wire in my knock sensor but I used the spyder intake wiring harness and plugged it right into my body harness.
