Tranny is acting strange

I dropped a new ea82t in my 1990 loyale and towe3d it in to my shop to have them do a few small technical things to it. Picked it up last night and the engine is running good but the automatic tranny is shifting fom 1st to 2nd at about 4.5 rpms instead of where it used to shift, not sure of the speed but too high. It was a little low on fluid after sitting for a while in my driveway but shifts from neutral to park to drive fine, filled it up all the way and it shifted better, still to high though. Was wondering if there were any transmission systems that could have been dirupted in the engine drop, or any adjustments that can be made. Thanks all

I'm not real familular with Subaru Auto trannies, but here's my guess on it.

 

Really sounds like your kick-down isn't working. The kick-down is what shifts it into a lower gear when you nail the gas pedal, (aka passing gear). On some makes of vehicles, if it gets dis-connected, it will hold the trans in a lower gear until engine RPM's hit a certain speed, hence your 4.5g shift from 1st to 2nd.

The auto trannys have a vacum module on them. It could be that during the swap it was not connected back in place to the motor. Its in the back of the intake ( if your tire is there take it out) and check for a small metal pipe that will run down along the passenger side of the tranny. make sure the rubber vaccume hose is on there.

 

Worst is that it can be the tranny its self. subaru 3at trannys suck and mine tends to slip sometimes. It also shifts like you say yours does but only some times also.

How do I check if it is my kick down that is the problem, is it internal? I will check the vacuum hoses tonight after work. Thank You

I found two hoses, one of which is on the passenger top side of the transmission and the other is right in the middle top of the transmission, They are both not connected to anything and were bound togehter with a zip tie. Anyone know what these are and where they should be going.

Did some research and found another possibility that would explain my tranny situation. Read about the governer being resposible for symptoms exactly like mine. My tranny gets stuck in gear and wont change til 4.5 rpms then rather violently changes into 2nd or third. Possible stuck spring on the governer, still trying to find out more about the vacum hoses and where they should hook to the engine, and havent found anything about the kick down or where it is located to check if it is connected.

One of those lines is for the afore mentioned vacuum modulator, it goes to the intake manifold, or gets Teed into another vacuum line. The other is the breather tube for the tranny, it just gets attached to something to hold the end of it, with the end in free air.

 

Sorry, really can't say much more on the kick-down. I just don't know anymore about it.

The vaccum module line will run into the back of you intake, there will be a nipple that you an see, If the moor you have switched in wasn't a auto it will be pluged of with a rubbe cap. The vaccum hose runs to another metal line that runs down the passenger side of the tranny, then when it gets to the module it will be connected to another little 90 degree rubber vaccum hose to the module.

 

he other rubber ose you talk of is right on top of the trany and does'nt go anyware, this hose will be larger than the module hose.

This is a picture of the hose on the passenger side of the tranny that I think is the vacum module, I couldnt find any other hoses that it could be. The picture is the passenger side top of the tranny right below the firewall. Is this hose a vent or something else? Also I can not find the modulator under the car, I heard ten inches behind the passenger axle but I cant see anything their, or find a hose going to it, any guidance would be great.
