'78 Brat comin back

Recommended Posts

well now that people decided to hijack my thread, I decided it was time to do a quick update;)

Here's the plans for the drivetrain of the car...

solid lifter EA81 with about 100,000 miles on it, needs a reseal

single range 4wd 4-speed from a '83 DL wagon

stock driveshaft and stock 3.90 rear diff

The tranny will be locked into 4wd the whole time. Also, since I'm going RWD, the front axles won't be there for clearance issues with the steering column. Also be adding a Weber and a few other slight upgrades to the engine, and of course, it will be the Ford dark blue I've always gone with in this car.

Body will consist of my shaved front fenders, shaved doors of the locks, handles, trim and mirrors. Also, the side markers in the back are getting shaved, the front valence which is totally straight thanks to a couple hours and a bodyhammer/dolly, is also getting the front holes for the bumper filled in, the rear is getting a custom roll pan made by yours truely, plus the drip rails on the sides will be getting shaved. I also scored a few extra parts from Tom's Brats like the bracket to bolt the bed carpet to the back of the bed, right next to the tailgate. Also got the tailgate seals as well. The engine compartment is getting everything removed off of the inner fenders and firewall that won't be needed like the jack bracket, battery tray and a few things like that. Battery will be relocated to the bed in a custom battery box that will also incorperate a box for some subs, since I am cutting the back of the cab a certain way. I'm installing a custom tinted lexan slider in the back. I do have a sunroff I plan on putting into it from an EA81 car but that will be later on.

Suspension will be stock in the rear, possibly a slight tub into the bed to accomidate larger tires, front will be my custom EA81 setup with the vented rotors.

I think I have decided that the car is getting painted silver with black and red targa stripes. I'll have to see what it will look like before i do it but I think that would look the best. What do you guys think, eh?

Sounds like it will be badass, throw up some pics of the process. I always like a good before and after.

Sorry about the hijack, I didn't realize who started the thread:drunk:

LOL I was just givin ya guys crap. I've been on here long enough that it doesn't faze me unless it goes off on some tangent about something not having to do with the same car that the post was about:D

Anyways, yeah, I'll be posting pics up every few weeks on it. I got the engine sitting in my garage right now and I will be starting to get some work done it here before too long. I think I'm going to go with a stock Hitachi for the time being until I can get a Weber and adapter again.

Oh, and you can't forget about my custom exhaust either. Granted, it'll be a little different with different components but it'll still have that nice boxer sound;)

now with a new update...

Bodywork is going good, still gotta finish up the tailgate and some on the main body. Hopefully Andrew will be shipping me my fenders for it which are totally shaved. I also have to weld in the sheetmetal over the front bumper holes and make my rear rollpan. Also have to weld in my inserts over where the rear side markers used to be and get my doors stripped unless I get another set, then I'll use those cause mine has a small patch of rust at the bottomr front corners that is all the way through. The hood is perfectly straight and is about to get primered. Also, getting the EA81 torn down and ready for a reseal with new headgaskets and slightly rebuilt heads. Then I have to pull the tranny from the parts car (s/r EA81 4-speed) and get them bolted together with my new 4wd clutch. Slide them right on in and bolt up the driveline. That will happen once I get the main body painted and the new EA81 front suspension/brakes put in. Then I'll be searching for the stuff to do a rear disc brake conversion and well, it just goes on from there.

Tomorrow, I'll be hopefully getting some sheetmetal to start on the rear rollpan which will cover up the old rear bumper holes as well. Maybe I can get some pics of her as well if I'm lucky!

Tim took my "86 Brat in for an exhaust leak... well, he and the custom guy thought it sounded a bit wimpy for such a tough trucklet... (in other words...normal, by my terms) well, now it sounds like deep throat with smoker's cough... I keep looking behind me for a real truck... and realize it's me... Men! Arrrgh! Hopefully it will rust off in a year or two :)

  • 2 weeks later...

got all the parts I ordered but more are going to be ordered here soon. I started tearing into that solid lifter EA81 I have as well. Was pulling the front of the motor apart (crank pulley, oil pump, waterpump) and when I pulled the crank pulley, I noticed that A) the front main seal was goooooooone (which I already knew) and B) there was a big ole piece of metal chillin in where the crank pulley slides into. I flipped out, thinking this engine that ran when pulled, was toast! For the next few minutes, I spent inspecting the block in that area, pulled the disty and checked it and couldn't find anything. I finally looked at the back of the crank pulley and what do ya know... big ole piece of metal was missing out of it, the exact piece that was floating around in that little area. So tomorrow, the engine will get the rest of the tear down, and I'm going to go through the heads and clean everything up real nice and get it ready to put back together. I'm however not going to replace the oil pump since this engine only has 100k miles on it. I can't wait for this engine to be back into the Brat!

Today, I finally got the engine torn apart, ready to be cleaned. I didn't tear into the shortblock since this is a lower mileage EA81 but the heads are getting all new valve seals in them. The only thing I have yet to get off is this stupid oilpump. I've never had one be such a pain to get off. Now I have had a couple on my EA71s that were pretty darn stubborn but I eventually got them out without breaking them. This one.... sheesh...

I'll be getting it steam cleaned hopefully next weekend and painted that dark Ford blue color I always seem to use (I love that color). Tranny will also be getting steam cleaned and painted to match if I decide to do that. Before I drop the engine and tranny into the car, I'm going to be jamming the whole car front to back and the engine compartment as well, in black:D I've decided to go with a black paint, with red targa stripes. Hmm, now maybe I should paint the engine red...... gotta match you know;) I will be taking some pics of some pieces tonight and putting them into my webshots folder:D

Ok, finally decided she's not going to be on the backburner much longer. Since my RX is having serious problems, been thinking of parting it out and using some money from it to put back into the Brat. This winter, she'll hopefully get media blasted, bodywork done and painted. I have a complete EA81 with 100k miles on it which I recently did a full reseal, new oil and water pumps, and will be mated to a single range 4wd EA81 tranny. Thinking of a blue, probably a bit darker but not too dark. Now I just gotta source a few parts for it but I have most of the parts to put it back together. I'm excited!

Wow awesome Brat, I now see what my weekend project will be, slam the Brat! I already had no intention on ever taking it off road, this just seals it's fate. Can't wait to see yours together.
