waimaks Posted April 2, 2006 Share Posted April 2, 2006 Ok, so I just picked up an '84 Brat as a parts car for the '81, At least engine, gearbox, and wheels etc anyway. Was gonna drive it home cause it ran, but as soon as you put water in it, the water drained out somewhere. After checking the oil, yes, the water is going into the sump..... waimaks Posted April 3, 2006 Author Share Posted April 3, 2006 As far as I know, Freeze or frost plugs, are incase your coolant freezes, and they giveway before any other more expensive part of the engine. GeneralDisorder Posted April 3, 2006 Share Posted April 3, 2006 They were not originally inteneded for that purpose. They are there as an atifact of the aluminium casting process. But someone noticed a long long time ago that they will pop out if the coolant freezes, so the name stuck. There should be two in each head... they will pop out and end up in the valve covers or down in the oil pan. Lack of proper amounts of anti-freeze in the coolant mixture. I had both of them blow out on my first Subaru ('83 hatchback) and it had sat for 8 years in a field with water in the crankcase.
