My Subaru is sick... :( help me!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've got an old Subaru 1800 Outback (EA81) from ~1990, the clutch was all messed up so i had to take the engine out. When I now got the engine back in I spotted a big problem.

The engine will work normal a sertain time, it runs well and sounds perfect (no muffler :brow: ), but after some time the engine will start to run bad, to keep it alive i have to pump with the trottle and the choke. This will continue some time and then suddenly the car works perfectly again.

The problem is not regular, it just pops up (its between 1 and 20 minutes between the fenomen)

I would be very glad if you could answer this Thread as soon as possible because im in need of the car

Make sure you were not having the same problem as me. My TPS was freekin out only at some spots in the throttle. Here is the link to how I fixed it your problem could be vacuum, fuel, or TPS.

what was the link? and how do i find out where the vacum problem is situated if there is one? could anything be broken?

Maybe that problem is caused by a sticky float level on the Carb... I Think So... Good Luck! :)

The float level was alright i think  ... what else could it be, anything before i put the carb. back into the car?

Yes, sounds like vacuum or fuel.

Could you post some pics of the motor as well as the vehicle? We've never seen a 1990 EA81 Outback. I do know that when I was in Mexico in 1980, the Datsun dealer was selling '72 models as new 1980's. Could open a few doors for vintage parts for other members if we can find out where the unsold inventories go.

You didn't state how you checked the fuel pump. They can be intermittent and cause this kind of problem. If you just looked at the pump without checking the pressure while the trouble is happening then you should check that out.

hello, i checked the problem like this; I drove the car untill the car stopped. Then i looked if i had fuel in the tube and in the carburater. Is'nt that enouth? do i have to check the pressure too?

It may be enough since you have a carburator. If it was injected I would suggest measuring the pressure as the pump can be intermitant. The pump on my MPFI car would cause problems when going up a hill. The engine would jerk. Replaced the pump and the problem cleared.

Maybe you can try with another carb...

You can easily swap your Hitachi carb. with a Nissan´s one, specifically with the Nissan Sentra (In some Countries is called Tsuru, Tsuru II or Sunny, or even Datsun 310, is almost the same) And try if it solves the problem... just to probe if that was the carb. or not...

I used a Nissan´s Craptachi carb in my EA82 for almost two months... it ran good, but that carb was from a 1,600 straight engine, so it´s venturi was too small to my subie´s Flat 1,800... and due to that, my engine didn´t reach 3,500 RPM´s well... but let my car idle and ran fine, untill I get my Weber... Also, it´s base is almost the same of the Subie, ´cos both are Hitachis.

If you wanna try the swap, I suggest you to search a nissan with 2,000 engine, it shall work better... Also some Isuzus, and toyotas used the same base Hitachi carb.

Good Luck! :)

.......

Can you Show us Pics of your Car? I´ll Love to see it. :)
