Idle problems. Vacuum leak?

Recommended Posts

I'm having some problems with the startup idle on my EA82T. Sometimes when I start it cold the the initial idle is higher than normal (2-2.5K rpm) and occasionally it will fluctuate rapidly between 1.5K and 2.5K. Once warmed up, however, the idle is spot on at 700rpm.

Any ideas what could be the root of this? Seems like it could be a vacuum leak to me, but I haven't seen any obvious problems with the vacuum hosing?

Thanks.

Jeff.

so i took apart the AAV (red circle; the same as the IACV?), cleaned it and stuck a new gasket on, but the problem persists. It seems that the fluctuating idle only occurs after i've been driving the car for ~5 min, about the time the idle should be dropping -- no sooner and no later.

Out of curiousity, what are the two components circled by the orange and green circles? I couldn't figure those out from Haynes.

cheers.

See that red circle in that last photo, with the thermostat housing... and the rubber pipe coming off behind it and going to the edge of the photo. what is that? and what does it do?

my hose was hanging loose not connected to anything. one mechanic told me it used to have coolant in it because it had rust residue. he suggested it was going to the turbo for extra cooling at one stage but a switch must have disconnected the flow....hmmm. but what do mechanics know? :brow:

i heard from somewhere it used to go into the intake? is this true? and what can i do if i am intercooled?? would it affect my idle- because my idle is terrible..

This is the Auxillary Air Valve (hig idle valve) for increasing air flow when the engine is cold and started. It's contolled by the coolant temperature so it's integrated in the themostat housing. If this hose is not connected properly there will some idling problems! The hose should be connected to the air intake system.

I am guessing the orange circle is the egr solenoid and the green circle is the purge canister solenoid - or is it the other way? I broke my solenoid (the orange circle) and now i just have the line running from below the throttle body (there are two lines - the one on the left). it just empties into the atmosphere, this line is a vacuum line i am guessing? has anyone any ideas where i could feed this line to ( my canister perhaps?)

thanks

i have a few vac problems of my own (ea82T mpfi)

heater_vac.JPG

from what i gather this picture here is for the heater, but there is a two lines that come out from it, the front one runs into the firewall, where is the second one suppose to go? this might explain why my heater doesnt work.

From what i gather from the FSM (which usually isnt much) this should be the duty solenoids? i never really looked at it before but today i found that hose that runs behind the bracket does just that - it doesnt connect to anything !!? what is the function of this and where does it connect to?

egr.jpg

is this the egr? it sits next to the near to the distributor and has only one line going into it from the thottle body.

p.s where does the hose that comes from the vacuum advance diaphram (also near the distributor) go to? mine is currently connected to the canister...which seems a bit odd.

thanks in advance
