Gl-boost
I want to put in a cd player in my Gl-10 and well before I tear it out and apart, wanted to ask a few questions. 1) I have the tape player with factory second din equilizer adjustments. Does this mean I need a special plug type adapter. 2) I have read of clearence problems with aftermarket decks, is this for all of them or just certian ones. I just never saw a factory stereo system like mine in any EA82T Subaru. Thanks
bgd73
ingenuity is the best way out for the radio. do whatever seems right. The only thing subaru I ended up keeping (for another radio) is the spot to put the radio in. Many ways to get it done. The shared ground for after market radios is a real nuisance- may not even function. Running for four channels new wire is great step towards universal and further ingenuity. idosubaru
walmart has an adapter that will plug into the stock wiring harness. it's the right plug but the wires will be noted wrong in the instructions. best to hard wire your speakers yourself and use the plug for power, ground, etc. we have the part number and wiring codes for XT6 and possibly XT models at http://www.xt6.net people have posted various ways of fitting stereos to the slanted XT and XT6 platform there as well. Subarian
A DIN stereo will fit with an adapter; the adapter sticks out about an inch. As BGD73 said, the shared ground is a real pain. It will hurt the performance of your stereo. If you're going with new speakers, I'd run all new speaker wiring.
rllywgn
scosche makes the dash adaptor and harness plug about 25-30 bucks for both. wal-mart may have the harness but you may need to get the dash adaptor from a stereo shop yeah it will stick out an extra inch but the adaptor makes it look nice and pretty... . make sure your harness plug comes with a single wire plug. i've seen some without it... its your memory/12v constant iirc. also for best results wire rewire your speakers. the factory system uses a common ground rllywgn
subie94
granted mine's not a EA but i found out that you don't always need the adapters when it come to installing aftermarket radios in subarus.. i used the factory brackets.only thing i needed to buy was wiring harness and antenna extension.. though i did need install kit for the radio in the 86 gl wagon i had yrs back and yes they stick out a bit.i also found out something about how the speakers had to be hooked up a certain way(something about how they are grounded, can't remember)
bgd73
I didn't even know they made an adapter. I am dead ends all over Maine with my Loyale... (I blamed obesity) err hum. What a lovely spring for shorts and tank tops and windows down with your favorite music on and .. oh no. The feminine goodyear blimp bearing it all! But anyway, here is what I ended up with for a total cost of nothing..... http://93loyale.50megs.com/rayd0.html I even found delcos with cd player. All unintentional cheap ingenuity.I can't even laugh these results off.

Spiffy
read this: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50840 then go to a car stereo shop or big electronics store that does car stereo installs and buy the face adapter kit and the wiring harness... you can fit any normal sized radio with the adapter kit... it brings the entire stereo out a bit, but not much more than the stock face adapter, and fixes the clearance problem... it's pretty simple... the toughest part is rewiring the front speakers to bypass the crappy common-ground system... --Spiffy
Chris Rogers
anyone got the standard facia still. I'm after one (with brackets) from the electronic tuning version with a pocket.
Gl-boost
Ok then, I now what kind of a nightmare these stereos can be, belive me when I say "how excited" I was when I read the first post with common ground in it. I went threw that for three days when trying to wire up the stereo in my 86 BMW E30:rolleyes: , ahh how I remember the fun I had, and how manny times I lost it before I just ran all new speaker wires throughout the car. Not to bad though, the post was a really good one, thanks again everyone.
Spiffy
also, I bought my stereo through Crutchfield online for my current '88 GL and it came with a free face kit and wiring harness, including wires and instructions for fixing the common ground problem... great deal too, using an internet coupon code... --Spiffy
